CODEINE THE BAND

Heard the Joy Division cover "Atmosphere" on my way into work today, i particularly enjoyed the way the lyrics are twisted from the original.

My favorite release is probably the Barely Real EP, but it's hard to pick favorites.

Best band on Sub-Pop EVER.

My favorite songs are Pea, Smoking Room, Tom, Kitchen Light and Cigarette Machine. I don't have Barely Real yet, but I often look for it while record shopping.

there's a SEAM single called "granny 9x" where soo young sings:

???

there is way too much crossover between SEAM and CODEINE

1989-92 The seeds of the New York band Codeine were sewn in 1989 when John Engle and Stephen Immerwahr recorded a tortuous, 9-minute version of the Harry Nilsson classic "Without You." With help from friends Bitch Magnet, the German label Glitterhouse signed the band in 1990. They in turn convinced Sub Pop to branch out from the Northwest and grunge and sign the band. Codeine's first release Frigid Stars LP, recorded in a basement on an 8-track, came in the spring of 1991. In the fall the band toured Europe with friends Bastro. In 1992 the mini-album Barely Real was released, featuring the piano work of David Grubbs (Bastro) and a cover of MX-80 Sound's "Promise of Love." Having finally lost drummer Chris Brokaw to the band Come, Codeine enlisted the aid of Josh Madell (drummer of New York's Antietam) for a second tour of Europe that fall.

1993 Following a foray to the West Coast with Josh, the band went through the process of auditioning a full-time drummer. "It was like stepping on kittens," says John. "It was really hard watching them try to play at our speed." Finally, Douglas Scharin was found. The band then moved to Louisville, Kentucky for the summer to break Doug in and prepare for the band's first extensive U.S. tour. "There's definitely something in the water there," says Stephen about Louisville. "There's a fine music scene, and both the people and rent are much kinder than in New York."

After a Midwest and East Coast tour, the band recorded the "Tom" single in Chicago, aided by the guitar work of the delightful Mr. Grubbs (now of Gastr del Sol). In the fall the band returned to New York, did additional touring with Mazzy Star and the Grifters, and finally completed their new album, The White Birch.

1994 Compared to the group's first record, The White Birch's sound is drier and more organic, with sung vocals (as opposed to the more "spoken-word" delivery of Frigid Stars LP). But the overall impact and effect remain just as powerful, thanks to the production work of Mike McMackin (who has engineered and co-produced almost all of the band's work to date). Trying to understand the enormity of experience, feeling lost or sensing it in others, betrayal - these are some of the themes that run through The White Birch.

Following the release of The White Birch on April 4, 1994, the band toured the UK and Europe with label-mates The Spinanes. In July, Codeine played a week of dates on the West Coast. The group's last show of the tour, in Santa Rosa, CA, ended up being their final performance.

Taking sides: "W" off Barely Real vs. "WIRD" on The White Birch?

Subquestion for hstencil and possibly Drew... what is the style of composition/school of theory/(predecessors?) for "W"? Because once it's converted into a rock quartet (LG/RG/B/D) it becomes very SLINT sounding.

Steve, I will listen and think about the differences between those songs. On the gneral subject of Codeine The Band, I went through a period while studying at Oxford and living in a single unit dorm room of listening to the "Barely Real" EP in a ritualized state and staring at the wall and doing nothing in a state of catatonic arrest at least once a day. It induced a state that John Cassian, writing to fourth century monks in his classic religious text "The Institutes" referred to as acedia, a state of melancholic contemplative arrest, described in the ninetieth psalm as "the noonday demon", a mood in which nothing seems possible, nothing seems worth doing, and yet everything is suffused with a kind of crushing, beautiful sublimity.

Steve-

Listening to "W" now. It just sounds like a transcription of catchy, melancholic indie rock guitar parts for piano. I don't hear the space or scale of a Feldman or Wolff New York school contemporary classical piece here. It has me wondering what General MIDI files of Codeine songs would sound like. It's rad, no denying that, and it's a ballsy move, but aside from the oddity of the instrumental choice, as a tune it's got the Codeine-ish fingerprints (a good thing). Do you hear Grubbs quietly humming along in certain places? I think I do, but I might just be going into my crazy place.

Drew,

Listen to "W" and then "WIRD" (off of The White Birch). Grubbs plays lead guitar on "WIRD", essentially transcribing his "catchy, melancholic indie rock" piano parts for guitar while Codeine (at this ponit based in Louisville) go for full-on Spiderland mode.

Tim,

At my friend's wedding, I sat at a table with Frank Kozik and Blag Dahlia (neither were invited but were dates of two of the bridesmaids). Blag was very nice and conversant but Frank was just way too cool.

I checked into that Codeine state of mind again last week with "Barely Real" and "The White Birch" played in sequence. I think "Barely Real" is my favorite record of theirs still, and I'm glad that when I listen to it I am not just listening in order to feel nostalgic about the first time I listened to it. I still can hear the record and not just the mushy-inner-home-movie it triggers. But it was weird that I would just light a candle and stare into the flame and do nothing while that record played. Like church or something.
