i am kind of excited to see if alan gilbert can revive nyphil from its current dreadfully boring state (though i hear the programming this season is somewhat more adventurous than in recent years). gilbert is amazing to watch, though. (side note, i know he's not conducting tonight).

how was concert?

it was aight, nothing amazing. bernstein was very nice, with robertson trying on lennyisms for size (don't quite fit). deyoung, who really looks like a fricka, was good. the carter was interesting, and he was there to receive the applause. the rouse wasn't without limitation, but a fairly good piece for contempo music and pretty appealing for an 'improvisational rock' fan. audience a little sparse and moribund, though not a bad young-person representation.

(young-person = under 40)

that's a fair age cap for classcial concert

i mean, shit, i'd be happy to have more people under 50 in audiences!

Red Light New Music opens its 2008-2009 season with the debut of the Beaten Path Percussion Duo. Featuring water fountains, bells, gongs, drums, sandpaper, vibraphones, and marimbas, the new duo of two new music veterans, Al Cerulo and Joe Bergen, will perform four exciting and innovative new works expressly commissioned for this concert. The program features:

A line and its shadow, a new work by Nils Vigeland, chair of the composition department at the Manhattan School of Music and longtime student of Morton Feldman, uses two marimbas to create a piece where the melody is always slightly out-of-sync with itself, creating multiple perspectives.

Vincent Raikhel’s Kitsume, named after the shape-shifting fox of Japanese folklore, explores the subtle line between difference and repetition in a theatrical work where the percussionists perform alongside two hourglasses that slowly evoke the passage of time.

(Eye of Horus) by Scott Wollschleger is dreamlike sound tapestry featuring bowed glasses, pitch
pipes, gongs, and vibraphones that call to mind those quiet sounds at the edge of perception.

In Æther, Kyle Hillbrand uses a unique combination of graphic and traditional notation to create a truly unique and beautiful new piece featuring marimbas and gongs.

Alongside these works, Beaten Path are creating an audio and visual tapestry of film and environmental sounds, expanding the concert into a theatrical experience.

The show at Santos wasn't that good, but they are amazingly inconsistent in hard to understand ways. the time before santos i saw them at studio b and they were amazing. also, i don't know how many shows they have played with the new drummer.

the set was ok, I just had to go home and crash. would like to hear more from St Dymphna live though. and I like Marnie Stern. ilxor tipsy mothra tipped me off to the Music Hall show coming up (I think they're playing Santos again that Saturday 11/29)

she was good at Knit Fac last year but that was with the real drummer (dude from Hella) .... before that she played shows solo with the drums coming out of a fuckin iPod (which was supposedly not as bad as it sounds but .... yeah). I think you'd like her tza. don't know who Zs are and I don't plan to get there early enough to find out.
