i think they pretty much already are the new dead

if i have a child i will name it satan (latebloomer), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

imo the new grateful dead is probably the string cheeze incident.

ian, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:43 (fifteen years ago) link

btw been jamming the dead all day. workingman's dead, live/dead.

ian, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:44 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah mee too thats why i got to thinking - imo the new the dead is the most coveted spot in the biz - its hard to figure exactly what the required qualities are - dont think any of the typical jamm bands have it tho

I think listening to grateful dead must be a sign that Fall is on it's way. The bright greens and sun beams of summer give way to the psychedelic colors of Autumn.

Sometimes I think that people and their current music choice has similarities to dogs knowing when a storm is brewing. Meaning that seasons are definitely relevant to music listening choices. Also weather and the moon.

i don't see a viable dead alternative among these poll options

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 13 August 2009 04:45 (fifteen years ago) link

ice cr?m, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:34 (fifteen years ago) link

what's the criteria - band w/ cult following who tours nonstop, gets $$$$ b/c of loyal concert-going fanbase, builds big culture surrounding the exp. of being a fan?

mark cl, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i think thats sort of the nuts and bolts aspect but its bigger than that too

ice cr?m, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

like phish was never the next dead - not enough magic

ice cr?m, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

icp is in the running then!

mark cl, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago) link

seriously JUGGALOS that is a pretty big and distinctive subculture

mark cl, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:46 (fifteen years ago) link

yea phish wasn't the next dead - the culture developed too much out of the dead's shadow. seems like there are too many phish fans who WANT them to be the next grateful dead so that they can be a part of it that whole experience

mark cl, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:48 (fifteen years ago) link

are Boredoms in the running?

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

o man can believe i didnt include boredoms

ice cr?m, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

o man cant believe i wrote can believe when i meant cant believe

ice cr?m, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

if the boredoms got suddenly wildly popular thatd actually kinda mimic the deads career arc

ice cr?m, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

for those criteria ICP looking pretty solid i guess

though time will tell re: merchandising empire

serious question: do people "do" a tour of animal collective?

sanskrit, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 01:19 (fifteen years ago) link

like caravans and hotel rooms and selling crappy grilled cheese sandwiches?

sanskrit, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 01:19 (fifteen years ago) link

no i bet they do for icp, tho :(

ovum if you got 'em (gbx), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 01:25 (fifteen years ago) link

they dont... yet!

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 03:18 (fifteen years ago) link

tbh i think the next grateful dead might be mv&ee with whatever their band of the moment is. i've seen more live tapes than i care to think about. extended jams... beards... hippies. think about it.

ian, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 03:52 (fifteen years ago) link

they played on saturday in the park before bunnybrains. i'm sure they are nice people. bunnybrains were awesome. but bunnybrains couldn't play that long because...somebody before them played too long.

AC's show in prospect park on saturday was less Deadlike than I expected. kinda disappointing from a people-watching perspective tbh
