Did you include THE RENTALS because they are both Friends of P. (Pavement and Pollard, respectively)???

Actually, don't answer that. It's pretty obvious you did.

iiiijjjj, Friday, 6 November 2009 20:04 (fifteen years ago) link

your use of the word "chops" in the question is fascinating, steve.

it makes one think long and hard about whether the measure of "chops" is objective or based on personal taste (and thus subjective.)

It seems clear to me from my listening to select Guided by Voices releases of a certain vintage that Tobin's songs were always more open and immediate than Pollard's, as well as being more 'affecting.'

whereas malkmush seems to have dominated pavement in a more significant way--the stairs cuts are still band recordings are they not? rather than the piecemeal fashion in which gbv albums were created during their heyday.

k3vin k., Saturday, 7 November 2009 04:44 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean i like "kennel district" well enough but nothing he did (in pavement at least, never bothered to listen to PSOI/the new album) touches like, "ester's day" or "awful bliss" or "a good flying bird". and those are just the obvious ones

k3vin k., Saturday, 7 November 2009 04:47 (fifteen years ago) link

k3vin k., Saturday, 7 November 2009 04:47 (fifteen years ago) link

k3vin k., Saturday, 7 November 2009 04:48 (fifteen years ago) link

knee-jerk answer was Spiral but I realized I own two Tobin records and none by Preston School of Industry
