I had one of these today. There's no thread about balut, but it seams like a pretty noize thing to eat, so this is where it goes.
Basically tastes like twice-as-rich egg yolk with a subtle hint of death. Anyone else ever ate a balut?

Oh god I'm still burping up this shit. Sometimes one gets the impression that they've eaten something that was just not meant for human consumption.

Seriously, you don't want to know. I didn't know when I saw The Reverand's pic on the WDYLL thread, thinking to myself "oh it's some kind of starfruit or variation thereof", but I checked on Wikipedia and all I can say is bleurgh...

― crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Thursday, 3 December 2009 16:47 (fifteen years ago)
filipinos believe it puts hair on your balls, so there's that.
― mizzell, Thursday, 3 December 2009 16:47 (fifteen years ago)
A balut is a fertilized duck (or chicken) egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell.
the whole concept makes me want to go vegan

My father in law is a fan and has teased my wife plenty of times growing up by slurping it down. I'm surprised the family didn't try to get me to eat it when we were in the philippines last Xmas. I might have tried it. I did try durian ice cream and durian chips. And ox tail in a peanut butter sauce is a regular meal at family gatherings. She's also been tricked into eating "chocolate meat" (blood stew) and I think her cousin was tricked into eating dog.

Cause my Filipino roommate goes "Hey, you want to try a delicacy from the Philipines?" and I go "Sure!" and then I think to myself "Oh fuck. That probably means balut." But I had already said yes. There's also an element of outmanning my pops here, cause he always told me he would try just about anything except for balut. So now I got bragging rights, more hair on my balls, etc.

Pretty sure I would depilate my balls a hair at a time with tweezers before I would eat that. My hat's off to you sir.

was it crunchy? liquidy?
― jaxon, Thursday, 3 December 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago)
i mean the yolk alone looks pretty terrifying. i could only imagine how gross it gets when you're in beak territory
― psychgawsple, Thursday, 3 December 2009 23:45 (fifteen years ago)
i would eat it
― harbl, Thursday, 3 December 2009 23:56 (fifteen years ago)
Not crunchy at all. Pretty much has the consistency of an egg, except for the embryo part which is a bit gooier. There's a bit of liquid with it and you are supposed to drink the juice before eating it.
― only mod can judge me (The Reverend), Thursday, 3 December 2009 23:58 (fifteen years ago)
I have video of this but I can't get it into a usable format.

You boil it twice I think? Once when the egg is harvested and once before you eat it iirc.
― only mod can judge me (The Reverend), Friday, 4 December 2009 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

it's not *actually* 100 years old
― harbl, Friday, 4 December 2009 00:28 (fifteen years ago)
I've had balut about a dozen times but I think it's a regional thing being so close to Daly City.
Daly City is a suburb of San Francisco, just south of the city limits. There are more Filipinos living in Daly City than any other city in the world... except for Manila.

Thousand year old/Century egg smells bad but doesn't taste too bad. It's a chinese thing, not related to balut afaik.
