I can't separate "Brown Eyes" from "Never Make Me Cry."

he tried to write this song about 3-4 different ways on this record but this is the best of them:

angel is a good mid-tempo groover (their signature right?) and has a sweet hook but i'm gonna defer to LB on this one.

christine's side c sap i dig in the album form but if we're gonna pick apart sides they don't hold up.

I'm still waiting for a certain publication to run my article on McVie's Tusk contributions, of which "Brown Eyes" is the best.

Inculcate a spirit of serfdom in children (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 19:09 (fourteen years ago) link

stevie's stuff at the end of "angel" is astonishing. like the whole song is this perfect understated groove then stevie just erupts at the fade

the way the drums on "brown eyes" tease out and don't fully kick in until the fade out is so good. i think it's my favourite mick performance on the album

As for Christine McVie, she didn’t really come up with anything too compelling for the record, which is strange since she is otherwise the group’s most reliable hit maker.

It and "Sisters of the Moon."

sisters of the moon is way worse imo

just sayin, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 15:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Naw, they're both trainwrecks, but I don't think anyone was really standing with her on the Angel trainwreck. Sisters at least holds together musically, in a dark, long skidding-into-the-80s kinda way.

cia never wore tie-dyes (kkvgz), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 15:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Good way of putting it. I also give Nicks a couple points for frantic scarf and sleeve waving in live clips.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i mean, i like 'em, but hearing those nicks songs mainly makes me want to go back and listen to "sara," "storms" or "beautiful child"

tylerw, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link

even with "Beautiful Child," I gotta be in the mood for it.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 15:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I think "Beautiful Child" is a gorgeous song, but I've had trouble with the "trusting, yes, but women usually are" line.

cia never wore tie-dyes (kkvgz), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 15:33 (thirteen years ago) link

always sorta thought that line was kind of mocking? like someone had said it to the singer, and she was sarcastically saying it back? maybe i'm wrong ...

Whoa, fuck. I hadn't thought about it that way. Could be! Thanks, Tyler.

For example, I can’t think of many first tracks less suited to opening an album than “Over and Over,” a country rock ballad by Christine McVie that is so minor and low key that she may as well sing “bury this on side four” in the second verse. This song, one of the most square soft pop tracks in the entire Fleetwood Mac catalog, is immediately followed by “The Ledge,” a Lindsey Buckingham tune that is probably their all-time weirdest recording.

He must hate Purple Rain -- starting the album with a frenzied rocker like "Let's Go Crazy" only to follow it with the psychedelia of "Take Me With U." What nerve!

I love Angel. I love that it feels so casually tossed off.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Angel is weird in the sense it's like many mid-period FMac two-chord jammy grooves, except that the first "verse"(? "Sometimes the most beautiful things...") is more relative to the chorus ("You feel goo-ood...") than what turns out to be the meat of the song. Like such an odd "intro" if that's what it's called, kinda sets you up for something quite different than the two-chord endless groove-out.

Angel shuffled up just as i entered the train this am and was a fine way to have to slide into that jostly hell.

the tossed off-ness, if that is even fair, allows the song to hold onto charm. A more crafted exploration of the sentiment would have gone gross given the recording process being conducted.

Why Lindsay Buckingham, why now? Did I miss an explanation post?
Over the past few months I have become fascinated by Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac. I had always liked their music but for whatever reason this stuff has become a lot more interesting and resonant for me recently...Also, I figured that there were probably a significant number of readers who either were not very aware of Lindsey’s music or hadn’t given it much thought.
