dmr, Thursday, 9 June 2011 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

free stuff in Brooklyn, incl shows:

http://www.brokelyn.com/our-brand-new-list-of-everything-free-this-summer/

already president FYI (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 June 2011 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

Hm I guess I'd be moderately interested in the HNIA DJ set but that seems like something to get stoned to (if you do that) and play at home in a cool dark room, not to pack a picnic and sit outside in the hot sun and like actively enjoy.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Thursday, 9 June 2011 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

shocked to see my hometown of Nutley in a WarmUp lineup

already president FYI (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 June 2011 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

wasn't there some Archers of Loaf-related FAP to be had?

already president FYI (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 23 June 2011 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

or, anyone want to see Fucked Up/Iceage in Wburg tomw night?

already president FYI (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 June 2011 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

I was tempted even though I just flew back from South Carolina this afternoon. But Twitter tells me it's sold out.

dmr, Saturday, 25 June 2011 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

I enjoyed Iceage, went to dinner for the middle band, and stayed for 3 songs of Fucked Up, partly cuz 285 Kent should be renamed "Sweatbox at Firetrap." Should be closed down by NYFD imho.

joyless shithead (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 26 June 2011 14:32 (thirteen years ago)

Hugh Masekela today at Central Park SummerStage; he goes on at 5.30 or so and doors for Somi and Freshlyground are at 2.

Don't start the chain you know? (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 26 June 2011 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I'm playing at this August 5th.

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 15 July 2011 04:40 (thirteen years ago)

anyone find set times for the 4knots thing today at south st seaport?

mizzell, Saturday, 16 July 2011 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

Anyone have any opinion on which of the remaining PS1 warmups look best? I feel increasingly out of the loop on their lineups.

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Saturday, 16 July 2011 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

The only people I'm really familiar with are Simian Mobile Disco, Gang Gang Dance, Juan MacLean, Black Dice and Das Racist, I mean out of the ones left.

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Saturday, 16 July 2011 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

@geeta - yeah Beppe is still doing his thing. Great dude. I'm pretty happy to be playing this one and will hopefully be playing around a bit more in future.

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 16 July 2011 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

ps not THE Shea Stadium

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 16 July 2011 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Um, I think there's only one shea stadium now, so it is technically "THE" shea stadium

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Saturday, 16 July 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

touché

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 16 July 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

Anyone have any opinion on which of the remaining PS1 warmups look best? I feel increasingly out of the loop on their lineups.

August 6 probably best top to bottom

Omar-S / FXHE Records / Detroit, MI
Simian Mobile Disco (DJ set) / Delicacies / Wichita / London, UK
Steve Moore / Zombi / L.I.E.S./ Kompakt / New York, NY
Beppe Loda / Typhoon / Cosmic, Italy
Forma / Spectrum Spools / Brooklyn, NY

Beppe Loda = being discussed upthread, legendary Italian DJ from the early '80s
http://www.tropicalcomputersystem.com/loda/beppeloda_interview.html

Don't know what Steve Moore does as a DJ but Zombi is a great band, heavy synth action, Goblin probably the closest touchpoint

SMD is kind of ehhh to me but they are a super popular, poppy indie dance act

Omar-S = Detroit techno, did a great Fabric mix last year

dmr, Sunday, 17 July 2011 01:09 (thirteen years ago)

other than that Sept 3 looks cool, I don't know The 2 Bears but the rest of it is pretty great leftfield disco revivalism on the DFA / twentyjazzfunkgreats end of the spectrum (if that means anything)

also a big fan of Sun Araw (tropical psychedelic w/ samples and loops) but I don't know the rest of the bands on Aug 27th

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lICT9FAKO1o

dmr, Sunday, 17 July 2011 01:15 (thirteen years ago)

Steve Moore's playing live - deep analog synth action, as is Forma's m.o. (Forma are in my top fave NYC bands atm)

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Sunday, 17 July 2011 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

definitely want to check out Feelies / Real Estate / Times New Viking

this is this Saturday - I'll be there

dmr, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

it's at Prospect Park for free (or I guess small donation)

dmr, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

Live at the Gantries starts Tuesday, July 12 and continues every Tuesday through August 16. Every show starts at 7 o'clock and ends with a spectacular sunset at Gantry Plaza State Park, a 10-acre waterside oasis between 49th and 50th Avenues along the East River (in Long island City).

2011 schedule:
July 19: The Beets
July 26: The Ebony Hillbillies
August 2: Yowana Sari
August 9: Percussia
August 16: Mathew Snow & The Way It Was

mizzell, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

I wd expect to be at Feelies too.

What is this venue where Fucked Up/Cro-Mags are playing free on the 29th? House of Vans, 25 Franklin St? If it's not outdoors, forget it.

joyless shithead (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

The stage is indoors but there's an ourdoor courtyard thing with a pizza truck and possibly a taco truck as well? And it might look big but it got v v crowded for the Off!/Superchunk show, so...

it's not that print journalists don't have a sense of humour, it's just (Laurel), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

aw i wish i could be in nyc this wkend and hang out at prospect park and listen to indie pop with you guyz
real estate is playing here tonight but it not outside and tbh can i handle that kind of youthful folk-pop cuteness right now? i am not sure

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

the Feelies are efficient live, and rather boring.

joyless shithead (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

― joyless shithead (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, July 20, 2011 3:11 PM (4 days ago)

This is true. Best two live Feelies experiences for me were:
1) Brenda singing "Dancing Barefoot"
2) The percussion up front at a Wreckless Eric show shouting requests

SuedeHOOS (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 25 July 2011 01:20 (thirteen years ago)

ill be in nyc 28th-2nd anything then?

YEMEN BLUES / WATCHA CLAN / SHABATE / AWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICA
Sunday, July 31
FREE SHOW
Mainstage at Central Park, Manhattan
Doors at 2:00 pm, Show at 3:00 pm
Artist Website: http://www.yemenblues.com
Yemen Blues, a supergroup of top musicians founded by Ravid Kahalani and Omer Avital, is an original and fascinating meeting of traditional Yemenite melodies influenced by the world of blues, jazz and funk. The flavor of West African roots and enhanced modern compositions come together to create a breathtaking experience and mixture of complex grooves. Their unique sound is the powerful outcome of Kahalani’s musical journey from his Yemenite roots to western influences.
Artist Website: http://www.watchaclan.com
Through its compelling mix of languages and musical styles, Watcha Clan is aspiring to be the sound of global society. With the 2011 release of their newest album, Radio Babel, Watcha Clan is poised to break down the barriers of what is considered “world” music. With a visionary eclecticism that incorporates everything from hip-hop to indigenous music, the band rolls out thriving, bass-heavy pulsations anchored by mesmerizing vocals.
If you unite Ethiopian rhythms, traditional Jewish melodies and prayers with be-bop, it would probably sound something like Shabate. Playing SummerStage as their first-ever, North American appearance, this culturally diverse band led by Abete Brihorn, interweaves African and middle eastern sounds with blues and funk underpinnings. Shabate is a merging of the secular and religious that will appeal to all audiences.
Artist Website: http://awesometapesfromafrica.blogspot.com
Enjoy a danceable journey featuring the best of rare and obscure African music as Brian Shimkovitz DJs the music he shares through his famed MP3 blog, Awesome Tapes from Africa.

Technically in NJ, but the Walkmen and School of Seven Bells (and some others) are playing at Hoboken's Pier A just next to the PATH station this Saturday for free! H-mag, a local art/community magazine are putting on the show but I don't know how heavily they've been promoting it. I had to tell ohmyrockness.com about it since they didn't have it listed.

Apparently it requires RSVP:

http://www.h-mag.com/musicfest/

Look for me at the Tunes booth (wherever we happen to be set up, not totally sure yet) within the festival. Tunes is Hoboken's music store.
