There is something about this video... a tableau of post-colonial Americana.

metafilter tells me that what I thought was a velvet painting is "Country Boy" by Tovine.

The effort the young man must exert to both open and close the sliding glass door

You probably can't do it...

there's something very napoleon dynamite about it

^^^^^^^^^ First thing I thought when I saw it last week.

I don't even know what to say and I'm only a couple of nano-meters from finding something v similar to this EXTREMELY COOL. But not...this.

The lighting/staging/production of the 2nd one seems...too good.

WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Monday, 7 November 2011 14:51 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, the painting of the cub gives it away imo

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Monday, 7 November 2011 15:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah whoever put that weird painting there when it's not even a wall, it's a cupboard, just so there'd be something in the background on the left...dead giveaway.

you guys are paranoid

goole, Monday, 7 November 2011 15:50 (thirteen years ago) link

100% sure that is not for real. They'd have to have been made in 1980-something, given the clothes and furnishing styles, but the vid quality is...wrong for that.

The original uploader toftlin links to lists "SIUC" as a school affiliation. Southern Illinois University Carbondale? Perhaps the location is around there somewhere?

I am also totally mesmerized by this video, for me the bizarre punctum is the plastic bag hanging on a doorknob in both of the videos. A colleague referred to it (and the mop, and the velvet paintings, and the mise-en-scene in general) as 'ripples in the ordinary' when we were discussing it yesterday...

these are totally staged but still great

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Monday, 7 November 2011 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean I could easily see it being bored midwest/utah types. also lol at 'jian sword dancing' 'jian' is just the chinese pinyin for 'sword.'

my guess is that they're some sort of ad agency viral

sorry guys what does "staged" mean in this context

max, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i am pretty sure that these are not... secretly-taped videos of a guy having a normal afternoon

max, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:17 (thirteen years ago) link

they are really great, the first one mesmerized me when i saw it, not that it can match the magic of the first time you see it and watch him give the lady the beer, and then later realizing that the guy is going to join the dance, just beautiful

max, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

the way the amateurish quality of the dance makes it that much more exciting when they actually sync up

and how it just cuts off

indeed, sword dancing has been practiced by a variety of cultures for millennia

the adoration of cats has been a human tradition every since man developed the capability to observe such beasts

sorry guys what does "staged" mean in this context

yeah, this is obv. some fucking art project or viral thing not a couple of quirky midwesterners naively putting on a show or w/e. don't get the appeal, it's Napolean Dynamite.

circa1916, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

like a swift cut from a jian sword, this thread is divisive

goole, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i think it actually is a couple of quirky midwesterners putting on a show?

max, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Damnit I don't like this trend at all, where some internet hero vetoes a crazy ass video as "fake/viral/staged". Even if it's staged, it's still ~true~. Think abt it.

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link

a show but like a show show

goole, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link

does the midwest have access to the real

max, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

This may be worse than the Iwo Jima flag raising scandal.
