can't ... stop ... saying this
arrrrrrrrrgh
― the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
this is my most-said phrase. when i saw mean girls the first time, i realized that rachel mcadams's character also says it a lot and that in face she and i share many speech patterns. it was chastening, but also, i didn't stop.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)
in face? in fact
i kNOWW, right?
― diamonddave85, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

― the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)
i had a bad phase with this phrase. i think i say it less often now?
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)
in these situations I tend to go with "No shit, Sherlock"
― World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
young man i work with says this a lot, it's funny when he says it. i say it a bit, it's probably less funny.
― aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
It's been shortened to "right?" with everyone I know now.
― jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
i know, right?
― the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i mostly just say "right???"
― max, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:47 (thirteen years ago)
i was saying "RIGHT???" for a while but i found it confused and alarmed people when all i was trying to do was agree with them
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)
Oh THAT'S what's been alarming people when I talk to them.
― jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)
srsly tho
― Lamp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

― Lamp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

― diafiyhm (darraghmac), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)
oh nm
― diafiyhm (darraghmac), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)
xp i know, right??
― the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)
our version is a quietly muttered 'this is it' or in very strong cases, 'sure, this is it' but that isn't the american 'sure' it's the irish 'sure'
― diafiyhm (darraghmac), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:57 (thirteen years ago)
correctamundo

― zubaz fupa (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)
I definitely say I know, right?! but think I say "right?!" more than ikr? because I think the latter actively bugs me just because it's used so much now. I get easily annoyed with phrases. You know what has been bugging me a lot lately? Seeing "well played" used all the time all over the gd internet. ugh.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)
well played suuuuuucks
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

Awww "well played" makes me feel like I have just bowled something at a wicket wicket, very civilized. I like it.
― how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:34 (thirteen years ago)
Only one wicket, though.
― how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:35 (thirteen years ago)
I don't dislike it as a phrase in and of itself but in the past couple years it's become really overused in a really annoying way.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)
i like hat tip
― Lamp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)
i mean i guess all cutesy self-aware phrases you use on the internet are inherently vile but its the world we live in

― am0n, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)
i used "i know, right" in life waaaay before i used it on the internet, though
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)
i think i originally picked it up from a male friend of mine who had a lot of surfer dude speech affectations, even though he was from chicago.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
xx-post No.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
maybe skater dude?
ikr has its uses beyond its uptalk provenance
― The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, it definitely sounds surfer/valley girl-esque.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)
in real life i never express enthused agreement with anything

the thing that's nice about it is the feeling of camaraderie it produces. unless the person you're saying it too looks startled, which sometimes happens to me.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)
How droll!
― L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)
irl 'i know', with the second syllable elongated, means muchthe same thing with perhaps a little less mock surprise, but u can't express that on the internet hence 'ikr'

i think i often use something really stupid that comes out like:
"yeah, no...yeah! See?"
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)
i actually say "word" all the time

no one has ever given me a funny look but that's probably because all of my coworkers already think i'm a super huge dork
― the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)
i feel like i've only ever used "i know right" maybe once a week and it kind of demands a very emphatic context that doesn't happen all the time -- like if you're telling someone a really crazy story and you just have to stop for a second and say it to communicate that you share their disbelief at what happened even thought it happened to you
― some dude, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 02:22 (thirteen years ago)
^ this is key. i say it very rarely, and only when someone is agreeing that something i've said is as crazy as i think it is.
― THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)
it never feels entirely natural. i always have the sense that i'm quoting someone or speaking in character when i say it.
― THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)
this expression is super hilarious to me
― judith, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 03:41 (thirteen years ago)
i don't think i've ever said it
probably because of old
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 03:49 (thirteen years ago)
like if you're telling someone a really crazy story and you just have to stop for a second and say it to communicate that you share their disbelief at what happened even thought it happened to you
haha that explains it!!!
as a high school teacher this describes at least half of my conversations about students / parents / administrators

it's true, most stories I've heard from teacher friends sound completely off the wall
