MOMUS IS WRONG. MOMUS HAS ALWAYS BEEN WRONG. MOMUS WILL ALWAYS BE WRONG.

He also says he is never coming back to ILX.

Helios Creed (orion), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Thread link plz!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

no thread. he played at a record store here today and i went to say hi.

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

oh did he play at Sound Fix again? Fuck that place.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

He likes to make definitive statements, that guy.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

beats withering sarcastic contrary-ness.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

All of that beats incessant self-pity.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

All of which still beats general lame-ness.

NOIZE BEATS ALL

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is he never coming back, tho?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It was about the ILX book, wasn't it?

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

TRUMP CARD!

oh shit am I missing the Apprentice?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Matter still UNCLEAR to me.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

IIRC, there was an ILXor who was planning on putting together some sort of book that contained four or five threads. I think it was a Cafepress type of deal where he wouldn't really make any money off of it. Either way, there was a big uproar over copyright ownership and such. Darni3ll3 left.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim Ellison is the art of real forgetfulness.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

THATS WHY?

GIVE ME A BREAK.

DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I am pretty sure that that's the reason ... although I must admit that that thread was a new pinnacle of bullshit and I tried to avoid it as much as possible.

I think John's real issue was that despite the fact he used his name on here and knew many ilxors in real life, he still wanted some sort of disconnect between ilx and TEH IRL.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The exodus of "celebrity" ILXors (M _ _ _ s, M _ _ _ s, JD) doesn't bug me. FRESH BLOD

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear, what pledge drive item did you get from KXLU?

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the t-shirt. I'm now cool and indie!

The rabbit logo is kind of funny. I regret not getting a shirt last year ;(

Are we still skeptical about teh mr. Matmos? The stuff he's posted about so far seems legit.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Matmos? I like Matmos!

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the dude just made those cafepress books as some sort of experiment, none were even sold but it stirred up all kinds of shit and foot stomping. i am sure if you are deathly ill and immobile it would be entertaining to read the thread in it's entirety.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the KXLU VIP pack... ??? we shall see what comes. i didn't even donate that much, i guess they

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

also, i met j0hn loooooooong before ILX but he probably doesn't remember. i was a pretty huge supporter of his in his early days (10 years ago).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the last time i saw him was in a very intimate show in c0ry br0wn's living room circa 1999 (with thingy doing almost all heavy vegetable and misfits songs).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

HIS MUSIC IS AWFUL.

DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear: teh Matmos guy started this one today:
Which Recording Has the Greatest Liner Notes?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

But you knew that, right Mr. Aja liners?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think people are inserting an extra letter into Gear's post (but then, I'm not sure how much of a "celebrity" teh other guy is either)

I like J0hn a lot. The only thing that bugs me is the vegetarian crusader stuff. I used to see him all teh time at Baked Bean Teeth's joint. Also I spent a week driving him and some guy from New Zealand around the east coast. But the way he left ILX was kind of goofy. Of course that Cafe Press thing WAS completely stupid. Yeah, like someone's gonna actually BUY that thing. But I have to believe J0hn was planning to leave for awhile anyway, and was just looking for a convenient way to say his goodbyes. On the other hand, I have a sneaking suspicion he might be posting occasionally under a psuedonym.

i DO love the way the old guard ILM indie-haters all decided to totally go gaga over J0hn's stuff though. That is fuckin' hilarious. Buncha fuckin' hivemind dipshits.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

who be the old guard ILM indie haters?

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate his music, and have for years, but I actually liked J0hn's posts a lot and he seems like a super-decent guy. Just can't stand his singing voice. Sorry brody.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to hear his lyrics to the L&O theme song

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

sTENC

whats the prob with his music?

brock (brock), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

indie haters -- "old-ILM" gatekeepers and fishwrap scribes whose record collection consists of like 10 really obvious dance/electronic records, and who accuse anyone with different taste of being a corny indie fuck and a ROCKIST. But boy, do they love them some Mountain Goats. It never fails to amuse.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

stence hates everything, haven't you sussed that out yet?
x-post

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I hate that shit.

it's like omg Blue Lines is the best album ever and you indie lovers should die, omg mountain goats are beautiful

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

of the stuff that I heard (this was a long time ago, mind you), I came to the following conclusions:

1. his voice is nasally and reedy and really annoying.
2. his guitar playing is mediocre.

It's just not for me.

AaronHz, are you Kenan?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I like mssv attk but you know what I'm sayin

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i like j0hn's lyrics sometimes. and even, on very rare occasions, he sings in a normal voice. but you know.. corny indie fuxxx, etc.

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

If I can't stand the voice, how would I care if the lyrics are good? I mean I don't doubt it, but it's like presentation is as important as content (or is content or something).

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

okay now I feel bad. He is a good dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not trying to argue with you, just stating my opinion. sheesh.

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

dude I'm doing the same! I just feel like people sometimes are all like "his lyrics are amazing" which makes me think well sheesh he should just be a top-rate lyricist then.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

like j0hn's lyrics sometimes.

Sometimes they have absurdities that make me chuckle. Sometimes they're trite and struggle with metaphors.

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

he would probably hate this ... but it helps to think of him through a Phil Ochs kind of prism. If you like Phil, it's not too much of a stretch to get with J0hn's stuff.

I like his guitar playing, it's real percussive; he's not trying to be Mississippi John Hurt up there; he's fucking attacking that thing.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I just feel like people sometimes are all like "his lyrics are amazing" which makes me think well sheesh he should just be a top-rate lyricist then.
stenc i guess that is the draw for me. that dudes music has always sparked something very very raw for me. outisde of the corny indie fuck (who cares?) status, his stories just sit very heavily for me. i guess for me, lyrics are NOt the most heavily weighted part of music. obviously, talking about, say, black flag, their presentation COMMANDS respect. but i think the tenacious way j0hn puts out his music is what is so appealing.
is this makes no sense, fuck it. i've calmed down since earlier posts .

brock (brock), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I like JD ever since I read something on Cr@igs List about someone who had their car broken into and lost a Mountain Goats CD, I posted about it on here, and he sent the person the CD that was stolen!

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it makes sense brock, I just don't take one over the other. It's got to be a COMPLETE PACKAGE, dig?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the Mtn. Goats about a year before I ever posted to ILX, without knowing anything about him, and wasn't that impressed at all. I could see how other people, with a greater tolerance for strummy guitars and LYRICS MAN, could get into him, but it just wasn't my cup of tea at all. In fact, I'd routinely get into joking arguments with a Mtn. Goats-obsessed co-worker about how much the Goats are teh suck. But now, of course, I preface such criticisms with the fact that I think J.D. is a really decent, smart guy who writes really well -- I almost always enjoy his Last Plane to Jakarta features.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i had respect for the dood before ilx and liked him more even tho all the faux populogangli discussions sent my feeble grey weiner into overlosenge drool fung.

i dig the guitar too.

the vox were fanable at a time. now i'm like unable to partake. can't order the whole damned menu anymore.

in the parlance of teh noize dude, "he's a treat."
m.

msp (msp), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

oh also: i like j0hn D on ILX before I had ever heard the mountain goats. (i had heard OF the mountain goats, and even TEH NAME OF TEH J0HN DANRIELLE MAN, but had never connected it in my head. until one day i did. that was when joe got Talahassee or something and kept playing "international small arms traffic blues" which remains, probably, my fave mtngts song.)

Also, I told j0hn that one of the new songs he played NEEDED A GUITAR SOLO and he laughed.

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

matmos I have no opinion about.

matos, however, I do. anyone remember the indie/dance punk/funk thread? Do I want to revisit it? I think because I hadn't posted and nobody knew who I was I was bashed from all sides. Probably by half of you. But I was right all along. That was the thread where I was made to look like an idiot because I stated "disco" was a dirty word during the 80s.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF DISCO WZ NOT A DIRTY WORD IN TEH EIGHTIESSSSS

sorry, dan. i'm high.
i agree that ILM needs to me nicer. (if that's your point?)

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see that thread! (probably before I came onto ILX)

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 8 October 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oh please -- disco was a dirty word in the continuous 48. maybe not necessarily in Europe, but in the states . . . selzer is otm.

off topic, dan did you get my email?

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 8 October 2004 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't care about nice (Ok, yes I do, you can talk about music without trying to belittle someone) but Disco had incredibly negative connotations in America during the 80s. Everyone BUT Matos and Chuck Eddy acknowledge this.

yes, I got the email, and a bunch other due to that thread! I'm about 200 emails behind in my inbox and am waiting for a free night to sit down and sift through it all. We shall "trade".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 8 October 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, dan -- didnt mean to seem pushy. im actually jazzed to make you some sort of tropicalia cd or something.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 8 October 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

<3 their alums!

i love the mountain goats sweden album on shrimper. it's great. i can give or take the rest (admittedly there are some awesome songs on a few of his other records, most notably "going to georgia" on zopilote machine).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

why the fuck are we talking about him on the noise board?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

selzer youth is pretty funny.. hahah. disco or no disco. micro-inie or not nicro indie or not is more hilarity at this juncture.... reaganomics in full swing what have you...

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

why the fuck is gygazzz awake at 5AM?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It really fucks me off that JD doesn not post on ilx anymore, b/c his posts were always good, enjoyable, funny etc. I have never actually heaRD TEH MTN GTZ, THEy did play in a town near me but I wz pathetickkally flat out broke at that time, bummer, eh?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

'On the other hand, I have a sneaking suspicion he might be posting occasionally under a psuedonym.'

he has posted under his real name once on an ILE thread.

I've seen mountain goats twice and said hi post-show the second time. I have also heard the peel session. There's a bit of an edge to both the playing and the voice (at least live) and I wz thinking that he is so nice on and off line but that thread was the one occassion where he blew his top off and he acted like he was like on stage.

I don't think he is posting under a diff name, partly bcz he has a forum now:

http://lastplanetojakarta.com/forums/index.php

But of course he lurks.

i liked talking to the goatdude about the metal. even if he was wrong a lot. iliked bashing dan selzer on that indie dance thread. THAT THREAD WAS FUN! i didn't know who he was!!! hahahahahaha!! you hung in there like a soopertrooper, dan. godbless the elektrobranca warrior.

If disco WASN'T a dirty word, why did they burn all those disco records in Chicago?? (Ok in the 70s and not the 80s but still.)

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, my memory is keen that in the 80s especially... disco got trounced... dance music was kinda cheesy... (yet hair bands were totally sincere and NOT cheesy... how the hell did that happen with all that spandex?)

i did love dance in the 90s tho. but i was a weirdo nerd kid. imagine my surprise in college when the rave scene finally hit...

m.

msp (msp), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the problem with that one thread is that CE thinks anything with a dance beat is disco, basically. Kinda silly.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yr not pushy jack...i'm just busy and lazy. will catch up and sort it out shortly!

the problem with the thread is that I was actually arguing with CE.

How come 2 Prefects promos have been sold on eBay already? Bastards.

it's just "law and order show" and "first comes the law part and then comes the order part" over and over. I asked. Oh, and over the last part you say something about Dick Wolf.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 10 October 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)
