COME BACK, DAN!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 9 October 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago)

come back, dan.

i think the problem (and its something i suffer from too many times) is that the tone of your post was too prone to be taken seriously partially because of style and partially because of people not knowing you well.

as for for mr. ellison (;-)) . . . postpunk is just as meaningless as indie.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 9 October 2004 19:57 (twenty years ago)

i was being unkind...and attempting humor, everyone else seemed to take it really seriously and got defensive, thus usual roles were reversed. But i'd assume that most people on ILX in general would know that I like many different kinds of music including indie-rock, as opposed to just being some 12" trainpsotting techno snob. But according to 2 threads today, that's a general impression! I honestly seriously thought it was a funny comment noticing how so many people in this context have this much love for a specific style/time/period of indie-rock that I would have just as much assumed would've been laughed at by the noise board.

Whatever, for the record I think indie-rock is a useless term because despite Tim's catholic idea of what indie-rock means, from my viewpoint, indie-rock is a specific attitude/aesthetic, if not sound etc. This isn't my choice, but what people my age have loosely defined. Different bands may sound different, but as a genre/classification, it's well beyong being categorized along with certain clothes/styles/attitudes/politics etc etc. It's not about the actual bands or records, but a whole subgrouping. When I was in college an indie-rocker wore certain clothes, had certain attitudes and listened to certain bands, again that may or may not sound like each other. Music was just a trapping, it was more an attitude.

Tim, regarding your idea that indie-rock are bands that followed the post-punk tradition, I have always had an issue with that. The very reason that post-punk morphed/evolved/dissolved the way it did around 83 seems to me that these people, coming up through punk, exploring different sounds and such, often just pushed their explorations in more specific directions...usually further away from the punk roots, either towards more experimentation, or the opposite, towards pop. i.e. post-Pop Group, Maximum Joy and Pigbag become Funk bands while Rip, Rig and Panic becomes "jazz". Heaven 17, ABC, OMD and others all go towards pop. Nikki Sudden starts writing more "conventional" rock music. etc. There's tons of examples of this.

College Rock was what you're talking about was called when I got into it, but like some of the independent comic book manufacturers, there's no difference in the music, just the money and means of distribution. Watch old episodes of 120 minutes or listen to classic college radio and for every cool band we love, there's crap bands no different then major label bands, just making music slightly out of favor and/or with no money. And college-rock was REM and U2 and even the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and while some indie-rockers may remember when those bands were (relatively) good or even great, or at least hip, "Indie Rockers" I know wouldn't consider those bands indie-rock.

I don't think "indie rock" has the genre-bending impulses of Post-punk, or the experimentaion. When I think of indie rock I think of bands drawing on more obvious roots of influences, which is fair, as many of those sounds were missing during a period when most bands on the TV/radio were cut from Motley Crue's mold.

Anyway, I don't mean to do what Tim just asked me not to, I'm just cutting up what he claims as a more direct lineage? Perhaps more abstractly I'm saying post-punk was more extroverted while indie rock more introverted. I'm not taking sides here, I love my indie rock (in the form of Galaxie 500, Stereolab, the Chills etc) as much as my post-punk. I just don't think they're the same thing.

re: come back, dan...be careful what you ask for. I tend to rant.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 9 October 2004 20:13 (twenty years ago)

I did an ut thread on ilm but I can't fucking find it but post to it if you do.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:05 (twenty years ago)

DAn when are you DJing again in NYC and where/what.

TOMBOT 64 (TOMBOT 64), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:10 (twenty years ago)

The link from post-punk to college radio rock to indie-rock is early '80s U.S. groups. REM were influenced by Soft Boys/Gang of Four/Feelies, Minutemen were influenced by Wire, etc. I see a lot of early '80s underground U.S. rock as being post-punk, meaning that it was punk, it was DIY, and it was art music.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:11 (twenty years ago)

The real link between post-punk, college rock and indie is ANNOYING MALE VOCALISTS.

TOMBOT 64 (TOMBOT 64), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:18 (twenty years ago)

tim, I agree with that, but what I meant by introverted as opposed to extroverted is Gang of Four or Soft Boys were coming from punk and expanding it through different influences, REM and other 80s indie bands were, initially at least, bringing it back in, making something more introverted and insular. That's my hypothesis for the day. It's probably bullshit, but maybe not.

tom, I'm djing tonight in the basement of Rothko w/ my friend JDH and another guy Julian Process from philly, who I've never dj'd with, so I don't know if we'll tag-team or take turns. So far I've picked out some disco and some late 80s hip-hop. I'll probably bring a grab-bag of new wave/italo/house/club classics/whatever.

upcoming gigs include next friday, the 15th at Lit during CMJ, the "afterparty" for the Troubleman Showcase happening a few days before. Then sat oct 30th, some bklyn party based on the movie the Warriors, and the 31s for the Halloween Motherfucker.

last week a bunch of us did a disco party and we recorded all 5 hours. It's being edited and will eventually be online somehow.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:28 (twenty years ago)

That seems accurate, Dan, though Chairs Missing, Young Marble Giants, etc. were pretty insular.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:33 (twenty years ago)

but an attempt at a genuinely new sound perhaps, as opposed to what I'm blaming later college/indie etc of doing, which is refining/perfecting something from the past? That's not to say there weren't bands during the 80s/90s/00s with the post-punk attitude, I suppose some of the "post-rock" bands even may have, let's specifically say, as I often do, that Disco Inferno is an example.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:36 (twenty years ago)

dan, come back

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago)

stop sending me messages, I'm not even here. come where? what back?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

dan, come backkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, US bands were more rooted in rock and roll: Feelies in VU/Modern Lovers, REM in power pop, Oh-OK in new wave (?), 10,000 Maniacs in folk-rock, Paisley Underground bands in psychedelia, etc. Minutemen and Meat Puppets started to get more rock and roll or old-fashioned sounding around '84 or so, too.
