PARSON SOUND

brock (brock), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

throbbing gristle

DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm... well getting into Beefheart in high school broke me in. Then at college it was Boredoms circa Soul Discharge. Which is funny 'cause around the same time I also heard HANATARASH 3 and I HATED IT. I couldn't see the point of it at all. Now it's like one of my favorite records of all time.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"deep" listening to the sound of the water coming from the shower head into my ear. 7 years old.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I really love when Boredoms sound like Beefheart like "mego"/"super coming"

ARAB ON RADAR BITCHES

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

not counting Velvet Underground, Cabaret Voltaire.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember! Also, gygax! is pretending to be La Monte Young, it's cute.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, another thing that blew my mind early on was the Borbetomagus track on that Matador New York Eye & Ear Control thing. I'd never heard them -- or anything like them -- before. In the context of all that indie rock it was pretty jarring. But I think I took to it right away.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

swimming to the bottom of the pool and laying on my back, exhaling and watching the bubbles rise to the surface.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

...La Monte Young recounts that his earliest aural memory was hearing the wind whistling through the chinks in the walls of the log cabin where he was born and having been greatly influenced by the beauty and mystery of this phenomenon.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never read such a thing from LaMonte Young but I relish in our similar aural impressions.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone ever seen Gygax! and LaMonte Young in the same room together?? Hmmm....

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to put my head against the school bus seat in front of me and hear the road's vibrations....

JON and IAN and I were watching RUBBER O CEMENT in BrookLYN and TONY CONRAD turned around and looked at IAN and I and made a funny face about 2 minutes into their set.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

TONY CONRAD IS A MENTALIST

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck man, Tony is a friend of mine. I don't appreciate him being called weird.

Ian you need Outside the Dream Syndicate.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

well, he's not a friend of mine, but I met him once, and he was weird. I'm making an informed judgement based on a first-hand account. I'm entitled to express that opinion and you shouldn't get so offensive! It's not like I called him a nazi or something.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he really an anti-semite?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

he's one of the most brilliant people, if not the most brilliant person, I've ever known.

WTF GYGAX!???

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

this is how rumours are started.

Kyle Lapidus and I joined our friends Matt and Liz when Tony and Jim O'Rourke were to be interviewed for WKCR or whatever Columbia's station was called. He asked who we are, but not like "hello, and you are?" but more like "who are you?" and I said "we're fans" and he said "fans...snaf...fans....snaf....snaf" and just stared at me.

That was, yes, weird.

He then got into a strange argument with his cellist Alex about how much cold medication to take.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

haha that was his ex-girlfriend, and she was much more strange than Tony!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if IAN JOHNSON remembers how "WEIRD" Tony's look he gave us was, I don't think so as he was pretty HIGH. I laughed and he patted me on the back as he walked by. I think we're friends now.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex was INSANE. How old was she?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

>he said "fans...snaf...fans....snaf....snaf" and just stared at me.

Makes perfect sense, more brusque than weird maybe

Anyone heard Fantastic Glissando?

(Jon L), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea but she looked about 12. I think she had some sort of congenital condition. I don't think they see each other/live together anymore. I stayed at their apratment for a weekend in 1998.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno but that guy Steve Kurtz deserves your support.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 9 October 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to say...I saw Tony Conrad perform w/ Alex and Jim O'Rourke at the TotE festival in 95 or 96, his first gig in years, they performed behind a white scrim with back projection and it was very Dream Syndicate and absolutely amazing. A few years later, ok, many, I walked into Tonic and he was plucking on some sort of thing making plinky plonky noises I could barely here over the annoying Tonic people. It was less then impressive.

secret guilty pleasure? I saw Ty Braxton do his solo sit on the floor w/ the guitar and echoplex schtick and thought it was kinda cool, but too self-indulgent and wonky.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 9 October 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven years pass...

Couldn't find a thread on Tony Conrad, but RIP to a drone legend.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 9 April 2016 19:41 (nine years ago)
