are you supposed to make assumptions about the person based on what they put on their cd? Like is it about self-presentation?

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont think youre SUPPOSED to make certain assumptions about the person

assumptions will be made and examined imo

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:04 (thirteen years ago) link

oh sorry you didnt say "certain"

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, isn't that kinda the function of the mix cd though? to use a collection of songs to "say something" about yourself to the other person, assuming it's a cd you're making for another person. i totally think you should make assumptions about the people.

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:07 (thirteen years ago) link

is the point of the class for one person to romance the whole class

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:07 (thirteen years ago) link

or is it more like speed dating

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

like i think i'd make up stories about the people and those would be my responses.

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

one person romancing = mix 3 guy iirc, he is obv trying to!

yes, to sarahel but the mixes are anonymous so its odd
and i dont think we're really supposed to try to figure out what the stuff is (titles, artists) - i just did that. oopz

xpost again: once i figured out mix 3 guy was who he was my idea about the person was totally BLOWN - i totally thought i had the person's number and i was way off. the only mildly interesting thing so far in this project so far was meeting that guy while listening to his CD and having my perception of it completely shift.

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:12 (thirteen years ago) link

like, that's the only thing im certain im going to write about thus far

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:12 (thirteen years ago) link

mix 3 is the best so far

i wld h8 2 have been in this class, honestly i wld just fail this assingment

polymath & psychics club (Lamp), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:14 (thirteen years ago) link

all told and even though i hate 1/2 of it mix 4 is my favorite so far because it introduced me to something i like tbh (el guincho), i also like amadou so

its also short

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:16 (thirteen years ago) link

last mix for today:

MIX SEVEN

1. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – “American Girl”
2. Some kind of instrumental oompah oompah thing with lots of trumpet and shaker
3. Jimi Hendrix – “Fire”

5. Very fast&jazzy skiffle-ish instrumental w/palm-muted ukes.
6. Beck – “Go It Alone”
7. Lauryn Hill – “Everything is Everything”
8. Instrumental: mid-tempo jazzy fiddle number.
9. Some kind of German (?) arena rock band with lots of clapping and hand drums.
10. Michael Buble & Nelly Furtado – “Quando Quando Quando”
11. Some kind of Italian (?) operatic pop. Male singer.
12. “Written in the Stars” from the Broadway musical Aida
13. Elvis Crespo – "Suavemente"
14. Sarah Vaughan – “It’s Magic”
15. Les Escrocs – “Assedic”
16. Very simple piano – maybe a standard but I can’t recognize it.

18. Earth, Wind and Fire - “Got To Get You Into My Life” - ABOMINABLE
19. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons – “Walk Like A Man”

really like that les escrocs song tbh
have a strong feeling this CD is by the girl in class who is a first year vocal major and chooses to go by the name "Liza"

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:19 (thirteen years ago) link

a couple of these seem like they are struggling to be diverse - mine can/will be accused of that more than any of them though im sure

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:20 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean mine has krayzie bone, beherit and mbuti pygmies lol

sorry classmates at least its short

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:21 (thirteen years ago) link

i like "mad world"

i think where you were saying ppl only really want to know what ppl think of their mixes, and not really to listen closely to other ppl's, wld be my own secret wish. but id feel really guilty about that & also unsure of what 'my mix says about me' & not want to make anything.

i think mix one wld be so much better if it wasnt radiohead.

polymath & psychics club (Lamp), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i think mix 1 is kinda perfect that it is radiohead actually

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i like mad world too

xpost i was just about to say, i think it is perfect and esp that it was the FIRST ONE

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:24 (thirteen years ago) link

ayo I had to do a dumb mixtape project like this in high school, except the gist of it was to write a paragraph about how each song related to my life. I filled it with righteous shit like Candlebox, Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Default, Barenaked Ladies, P.O.D., System of a Down, and FASTBALL — carefully culled from my collection of ≈ 15 CD's and tapes. I don't pity my teacher though, because she made the class sit through her favorite Indigo Girls and John Mellencamp songs while she reminisced about ex-boyfriends and dying grandparents. ugh.

administratieve blunder (unregistered), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:41 (thirteen years ago) link

haha i had to do that as well in high school, w/ the writing about how it was to do with me/my life - we also had to present one song from it w/ a short speech, i thought i was some kind of huge rebel playing some shitty pop punk song iirc

jesus x @ your teacher tho

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:46 (thirteen years ago) link

lol, but with that approach at least there was no hiding the fact that it was all about ME ME ME ME ME toddlers trying to impress each other and construct identities out of Offspring songs. on the other hand your anonymous mixtape swap is just baffling. I mean are you at least allowed to go into the sociology of college kids' musical tastes as long as you don't get too judgmental about any particular classmate/mixtape? if your professor expects a musicological analysis of fucking John Mayer, then I feel bad for you, bro.

administratieve blunder (unregistered), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 04:09 (thirteen years ago) link

oh man i had to do this with a philosophy of musical aesthetics class that i fucking hated and i was such a bastard w/my mix. it was a class that was half music majors and half upper level philo dudes and it was just terrible, it was supposed to be our fun end of semester project and it went on for a week of evening classes, and we did our best to get horrifiyingly drunk before class every night and then just unload horrors on all the classical composition dudes, the last night my friend adam snuck off in the bathroom of the bar and took so many muscle relaxants that we had to go lay him down in the backseat of his car. i wonder if i still have the tracklist somewhere.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 05:01 (thirteen years ago) link

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 05:02 (thirteen years ago) link

my prof was a world renowned harpsichordist (?) and linguistic philosopher and made this painful effort to head nod and groove with everything that was played, it was hilarious and terribly embarrassing all at once.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 05:08 (thirteen years ago) link

haha welll my teacher in class yesterday was like "wow, these mixes are really...different from other years!!" and was doing this horrible face mask smile, brave-face-putting-on type thing and nodding furiously

from what my musicology friend said and that^ i think maybe now that the class has no pre-req its just got an influx of dumbasses or w/e

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 06:31 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost my teacher nods to EVERYTHING and kinda rocks on his feet

I'm bumping this thread because I remembered it and this whole stupid class and experience while thinking about Ethan, who made this mix. Taking this class together put us on each other's radar. Later, his band started playing shows at my house, and "tall grindcore guy" turned into "Ethan." He moved to DC a few years ago——we'd always run into him at Deathfest, and crash with him when we played in town or went to a show up there. I found out a few days ago that he was very sick with an aggressive brain tumor; before anyone could process even that news, he died. He was honestly SO like this mix: hilarious and surprising. A relentlessly uplifting and interesting person to be around. So missed.
