there is a girl around whose interests have encouraged me to take an open mind to the likes of hayek & reason magazine. right now i'm reading "individualism and economic order" and finding myself yelling-at-the-page as often as i'm nodding in agreement. he draws a distinction between the english indivudualist tradition and the continental tradition that grew out of descartes that i think is kinda bullshit. then i come across something like this on p 20 for instance
If left free all men will often achieve more than individual reason could design or forsee.
in a way i didn't really expect he's arguing that a collaborative society full of free actors can spontaneously draw up superior solutions to the problems it faces. his insights on "emergent order" and behavior in complex systems are really interesting to me particularly as they've influenced the kinda nascent field of studying complex adaptive systems. i'm reading him less for "the road to serfdom" (which i'm not actually reading at all) and more for what he has to say about the ways complex systems behave.

i don't really fuck with paleocons--alliances of convenience sure are nice to get folks in the street (hi stopwatching.us), but class analysis is pretty paramount for my willingness to take someone's thinking seriously in the long term.
and in any case, if i need somebody who gets withering on the same topics and doesn't want me to vote for ron paul, there's always max blumenthal.

pretty funny that ten years ago everyone talked about how the real drivers behind the antiwar movement were a bunch of leninist dead-enders, but the guy running antiwar.com is a buchananite

you really think killing fast track at the cost of trade adjustment assistance is something to celebrate? i don't understand how this is a win for workers in any way...
plz explain
― flopson, Friday, 12 June 2015 20:26 (nine years ago) link
oh i didn't see that this was already being discussed on the politics thread
― flopson, Friday, 12 June 2015 20:28 (nine years ago) link
oh hey sorry hadn't seen this
so some broader context
TAA as it was being presented in this bill was essentially shit--this bill massively underfunded it because that's the only way it would ever have a chance in the GOP led house. TAA is great and necessary--this TAA bill was a joke, and attaching it to Fast Track was a cynical white house-driven maneuver to try to ensure TPA's passage. our leg people are confident that there will be another, better shot at TAA before the summer is out.
republicans have this pattern--not just with TAA obv but with "government services in general"--of defunding programs to the point of crippling their capabilities, then claiming that they don't work. that's what they've held with TAA for years: cut, then claim its broken. we know it works when its funded, and we shouldn't have to cut medicare to pay for it, which is part of what they were pushing on this as well.
but in short our position is there's gonna be another shot at TAA, and beating TPA was big enough to take that gamble.
