Ampelmann has apparently become a sort of a signifier of East German nostalgia ("ostalgia"), because they only had/have it there. You can still tell you're in what was formerly a part East Berlin if you see it in the lights, though if I remember correctly they've replaced it with the more universal symbol in most Eastern districts as well.
