my best disneyworld memory:
when i was 20 i went to visit a friend who was working on a TV show taped at MGM studios. The set was in one of the studios you see on the "behind the scenes" tour. the backlot had all these bicycles lying around just for studio employees to get around fast and easy.
since she had 24 hr access we hung around late one nite after the park closed and waited till about 2am. then we went on the most epic bike ride through the whole theme park. my favorites were cruising down the fake neighborhood street (really creepy at nite) and the roger rabbit street (the daytime city sound effects were still blaring-- kind of creepy too). we got off our bikes and climbed all over the honey i shrunk the kids area too. we saw one or two security guards who didn't bother us at all since we were on the official studio bikes so surely we couldnt have been a couple of kids fucking around. otherwise we had the whole park to ourselves.
one of those nites i'll probably relieve on my deathbed.
the next nite we kind of did the same thing at epcot, but without bikes it wasnt as fun so we just looted souvenir stands instead.

I've been to DW three times and hated it more on each visit.
I know Beeps is going to want to go one day, and I don't know what we're going to do. One option is letting her grandmother take her. But as her primary male role model, I don't think it's going to be a good idea to have her observe her father screaming at Winnie the Pooh and then falling into the fetal position on the pavement, sobbing uncontrollably.

Yeah, this sounds like Jacksonville.
Since Florida bashing is welcomed here...
The first time I went to Orlando on my own was when the rave thing first hit Florida circa 1993. I remember going to the Edge in Orlando and I met very few people actually from Orlando. People traveled from all around, like raves were the new grateful dead or something. And they all had laundry detergent boxes as purses, which was kinda O_o
But it wasn't until I'd say 1995 or 1996 that Orlando became that creepy psuedo-goth/fetish raver place that it seems to continue to be.
By that time, I had an unhealthy obsession with Stereolab and Dr. Buzzard (and a growing obsession with Brazilian music), so this was the sound of my trips to Orlando...driving past the piercing shops and Firestone-esque clubs as to not see some fat dude with blue spikey hair and a vinyl backpack.
I cannot vouch enough for Boma in the Animal Kingdom lodge though. African buffet! It was that and Park Ave Records in Winter Park that kept me coming back like every 7 weeks.
The problem with Jacksonville started in their pre-Hollywood past. It was a big movie town in the teens and 20s. Oliver Hardy lived there to be near the studio he worked out of. Anyway, paraphrasing some tour I went on, they didn't require permits to film in the streets then, and the local officials thought this was too wild and out of hand. So they clamped down on everything (including sidewalk cafes !?!), pushing not only the movie industry out of town, but kinda shutting down several businesses and creating a huge void that led to their urban sprawl.
Marineland in St. Augustine between Orlando and Jax was originally built as a movie studio for underwater filming. Much of the Creature from the Black Lagoon was shot there, amongst others.
By the time I moved to Florida, Marineland became an annual field trip destination for all area schools. I was always awed by the architechture (I was about 13 at the time). The situation there is about the saddest there is now.
