The difference between ordering Coffee and Tea in a Cafe

Coffee
The barista will ask you what type of coffee you will desire. This can be anything from short black to flat white to Americano to expresso to uno cappuccino chiaro, grazie. Then the barista will ask if you want any extras like more milk, skim milk, goat's milk, added flavouring like vanilla or bosenberry and more. The barista will then lovingly create your desired coffee with the machine, creating the perfect cup at the perfect tempature to drink straight away. Then the barista will say, "that'll be four dollars, thanks".

Tea
The stupid git behind the counter will dunk a tea bag in a boiling hot cup of water that'll take half an hour to cool down to an acceptable level to consume without causing third degree burns to your tounge. Then they'll say, "four dollars". And it'll be Earl Grey because that horrible shit is all they bother having.

thanks for this

Beautiful thread, however, in America they typically have you pick out the tea from an assortment and you dunk it as you desire. This is my experience, anyway. And average cost is $1.00 in my experience. Move out here, Es-T!

TEA BOY PATO

gr8080, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

It's all true.

Somewhat related, I didn't know fucking hillsong part-owned (or someshit) Gloria Jeans in Australia.

Not that I ever go to Gloria Jeans or nuffin. I promise.

Drooone, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

Esetb you must go to some shitty cafes, because whenever I have tea at a cafe I can ask for english breakfast or chammomile or whatever, and it comes in a nice pot with milk in a jug on the side and sometimes even spare hot water.

Still usually teabags rather than looseleaf tho admittedly.

Trayce, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Move out here, Es-T!

Erm, I did for about five months before THE MAN took away my visa.

And I stupidly went to the local Starbucks and had the worst tea ever.

I didn't order tea in any of the decent cafes because I was too tempted by the cane sugar Cola ^__^

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and you know that Gloria Jeans are in AMERICA now! I freaked out when I walked past it at the King of Prussia Mall.

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

No, I go to Adelaide cafes which have THE GREATEST COFFEES ON EARTH. Wonderful, as I don't drink coffee. Actually, one place on Hindley Street does serve tea in a kinda alright pot. But with a teabag, natch. And they at least have generic Liptons teabags...even through that is hardly my desired Irish Breakfast tea.

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

is GJ an aus thing? they've been in malls here in the states for as long as i can remember.

gr8080, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

I thought it was Canadian.

Whatever it is it's fucking awful.

Drooone, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno what it is but I know it sucks!!

I'm King Boy Pato and you can take that to the bank!

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I didnt think GJs was Australian, it is too shitty. But I'm a freaking coffee snob.

Oh man now I want a cup of tea.

Trayce, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

This coffee talk has reminded me of the classic "vanilla bullshit" call in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

That was way too funny.

Drooone, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

I actually found a decent place to get a cup of tea in tha ADL today. It's at the David Jones Food Court and for $2 (!) you can get a nice cup of tea served with loose-leaf in some kinda funky holder!! And any type of tea you like, even my favoured Irish Breakfast.

TEA BAG PATO

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 19 January 2009 08:16 (seventeen years ago)

the guys at peet's coffee and tea are very annoying when you order tea. i got lectured by one of them in santa barbara for not making my tea correctly. i was like "when you start using boiling water, then you can tell me how to make a cup of tea". they all look like they ride fixed. is tea a hipster drink in the U.S. now?

caek, Monday, 19 January 2009 08:17 (seventeen years ago)

they all look like they ride fixed.

i have no idea what this could possibly even begin to mean

Best place to get tea in the world is on the third floor of QVB in Sydney. They serve awesome Irish Breakfast in those futuristic circular pots. It is DA BOMB as the kids like to say.

I do like a good pot of leaf tea with fresh scones and cream, knobbish as that is.

Trayce, Monday, 19 January 2009 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

In Finland at least most cafes with a variety of fancy coffees also have a variety of loose leaf teas. The places where you can get tea in bags only usually only serve only one type of pot coffee too. And they definitely don't have baristas.

Tuomas, Monday, 19 January 2009 10:02 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks, Tuomas.

how is it

Bo, a 6-month-jackson Portuguese overdrive (Curt1s Stephens), Monday, 20 April 2009 11:44 (sixteen years ago)

it was watery and i would not do it again but it wasn't so gross that it ruined the coffee i dunno. like it tasted exactly like coffee + black tea, it didn't produce a third taste like say orange juice + coffee probably would (but that would be really disgusting)

someone who is aware how stupid the net is (harbl), Monday, 20 April 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

also the tea was unsweetened and i hate coffee with sugar in it so that was ok

tehresa, Monday, 20 April 2009 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

because i am always mega thirsty when i wake up so i poured iced tea into my coffee cup while i was making breakfast and then i forgot it was still in there when i poured coffee and i was like, whoa how is this mug filling up so fast when there is still coffee in the french press OOPS LOL

someone who is aware how stupid the net is (harbl), Monday, 20 April 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

halol
i never do things that innocuous. usually i just knock spice jars out of the cabinet when reaching for the coffee and then have to clean up a floor of glass and nutmeg O_o

There are disputes, if there were independent inventions of coffee-and-tea-mixtures in the Western world, some claiming it to be a Dutch serving. Various individuals have combined coffee with tea, sometimes using the name CoffTea or Tea Espress. The concept was suggested on the Halfbakery in 2000,[6] and singer Peter André claimed to have invented CoffTea in an interview in 2004.[7] In an interview in 2006, Sandra Blund recommended combining Savarin with chamomile tea in a ratio of 2 to 1 or combining organic Bolivian coffee and White Rose tea in equal parts.[8] Blund claimed to have met a Cistercian nun from Tennessee who combined the drinks in 1936 - about the same time, when such beverages were invented in Hongkong.
