It is incredibly weird. I used to read a make-up community on livejournal (I know, don't judge!) and those girls were CRAZEEEE! They would post still pics of their MAC hauls which they also called MAC porn and then link to youtubes like the ones above. It was just sort of insane and fascinating at the same time.

I just keep thinking, what would Theodor Adorno make of this? I mean, if he thought 50s Cadillac tail fins were awful ...

i dig fashion bloggers actually putting outfits together but why watch a video of someone just holding up stuff to the camera?

It strikes me as something that owes a lot to the Home Shopping Network/QVC concept, but with the self-absorption and self-promotion customary to personal youtube videos. The one fascinating thing about HSN/QVC is the host's ability to go on and on about this banal object for an absurd amount of time. These don't seem to do that.

i was rambling on to one of my former coworkers about how i was fascinated by anthropologie clothes because they could *almost* be OK but then they find a way to overdesign each piece by making it too cutesy, detailed, awkwardly proportioned, wrong color, it was always *something* then was like.. wait, you are not interested in this at all. anyway. not hard to go on and on about clothes imho. i blame society.

I'm getting a schoolteacher/big sister vibe from a lot of these videos: all these 21-year-old women making puberty walkthroughs for a target audience of 12-year-olds, knowing that non of them have the attention span to watch their videos from start to finish but hoping that a fraction their wisdom gets through. it would be touching if it weren't so tedious.
