Aust xmas:
BBQ seafood (prawns, calamari, snapper, oysters etc etc)saladslots of booze
Traditionalists do this:roast turkey/ham/chookroast veggiesplum pudding + custard
Why anyone does the latter on a 40degC day is beyond me tho. We're doing seafood and sausages this year.

i have terrible memories of having to eat cold ham slices twice a day for weeks after xmas, till it was all gone. mum would just freeze it to make it last longer, which made it taste even worse.
ham is not allowed at our family gatherings anymore after a string of funerals where we ended up with like 5 hams.
― tehresa, Sunday, 13 December 2009 22:59 (fifteen years ago)
I detest ham, and the supermarkets seem to be full of it at this time of year, like as if no-one else eats any other kind of cold meat.
― HUH? not appropriate (snoball), Sunday, 13 December 2009 23:00 (fifteen years ago)
we have chicken and DUMPLINGS! every xmas eve, followed by lasagna for xmas day lunch when everyone comes over (dad always makes two pans, a meat pan, and then a vegetable pan for the vegetarians, which he makes a huge deal about year)
also lefse which for the uninitiated are norwegian potato tortillas that you slather in butter and sugar and is super good
― iiiijjjj, Sunday, 13 December 2009 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

norwegian potato tortillas that you slather in butter and sugar
sounds amazing, will teach myself how to make
― horseshoe, Sunday, 13 December 2009 23:09 (fifteen years ago)
from what i can remember you just boil a grip of potatoes, "rice" them by pushing them throw a collander, mix with butter and cream into a doughy consistency, roll into tortilla form on a floured surface, and then throw on a hot griddle for about 10 seconds on each side, but you have to use a special wooden lefse turning stick to turn them otherwise xmas is ruined.
― iiiijjjj, Sunday, 13 December 2009 23:13 (fifteen years ago)
maggi's onion soup mix + reduced cream = dip
LOLLLL how could I forget that old standby!
And pav and trifle!!
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 13 December 2009 23:13 (fifteen years ago)
And as for ham, I hate the stuff, always have. Yet every year on xmas morning (well, when I'm up home anyway), dad cuts big thick slices and fries them for breakfast and asks me how muuch I want with my eggs... I think it's become a running joke now so I'll get indignant and rail "I DONT LIKE HAAAAMMM".
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 13 December 2009 23:14 (fifteen years ago)
