Benson bit me. He’s been having some behavioral problems the last few months (aggression when he’s tired) and on Tuesday morning he bit me in the face and I had to go to the ER and wound up with two stitches right through my top lip. I am so heartbroken. Going to contact a doggy therapist tomorrow but I’m really afraid this is age related and isn’t going to get better. This guy has been my source of comfort through so much the last few years and I’m beside myself. I am afraid to even let him sleep on or near me now. :(

Yes. I think it’s honestly a combo of doggie PTSD and age but it just sucks and my fucking mouth hurts! After he did it I felt with my tongue and my upper lip was split in half. The little bugger only has like 7 teeth left! I just really hope the behavioral therapist can offer some solutions.

so sorry to hear that. my little guy and i do a fair amount of play-fighting, and he likes to bite my nose. i never worry about him really biting me, but he's getting older too, and the thought has crossed my mind - what would i do next if he actually bit me?

Aw, V hopefully he never will. I grew up with dogs and plenty got older than B and I’ve never experienced this before. I do think this is a combo of doggie PTSD and old age. I cried on the phone to my therapist about it today, “But he’s my *sniff* little *sniff* cuddle buddy!” :/

well, he is, isn’r he? i think you should give him another chance. can they medicate him?

my friends/family have had experience with dog old age and dementia-type symptoms and that is definitely an option. not a given that it’d work, but worth trying. he’s your little dude, he’s just in a different place in life

Oh I’m not giving up on him or anything!!! I was only sad because it’s hard when he growls now and given that this was so recent I’m a little afraid and that’s not a great feeling.

Benson is 12 next month (how?!) and Ralphie is 8 months and the puppiest puppy I've ever met. He's the biggest rascal but a real sweetheart. They are . . . best frenemies.

My partner's grandad had a dog called Benson and because it was the first dog my non-verbal autistic son encountered, all dogs would be called Benson by him for over a decade after this particular Benson passed.

Thanks everyone. We took him to the vet yesterday and will get his ashes back in two weeks. He had a good long life but it's still never easy. Your words were all so kind. I shared him here since day one! <3
