Is there some middle name stats chart out there? Bcz I feel like 37% of girls ~my age or younger have the middle name of Marie.

oh so if confirmation names count - mine is Veronica

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Saturday, 8 May 2010 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

my confirmation name was francis, for st francis of assisi. i partly chose it because i liked him and partly because i wanted a boy's name. my friend took brigid because it rhymed with frigid and she said that would be right up their alley. church-wise we have not amounted to much.

estela, Saturday, 8 May 2010 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

I was expecting ENBB's to be Brigid or Bernadette or Beatrix

iirc: when I was 13 I had to confirm that I was d4l w/ jc and whatnot. at some point you get to take the name of yr favorite saint and slot it in between yr middle name and yr last name.

the only thing I actually remember is sitting down for an interview with Father St3ve. Due to the poor quality of my doctrinal education, I had no clue what he was talking about. I think I just kind of repeated his question back to him, something about souls, afterlife, purgatory I guess. I tried to visualize my grandmother's soul floating around somewhere to help answer the question but it didn't help.

o ya middle names: I am jealous of the following which I know irl: Melvin, Woodrow, and Sunshine

I don't have a middle name.

SUnshine, yes! I love when you can tell there was a hippie parent who had to compromise by their kids middle names, like my friend whose middle name is Waterfall.

sveltko (k3vin k.), Saturday, 8 May 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

yeah about 6 months post-confirmation i decided religion was not for me after all! i think that whole process helped 'confirm' that, lol.

tehresa, Saturday, 8 May 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, same. I went to a Catholic girls HS and decided a couple months in that I didn't believe any of it and was an atheist. Pretty much did the confirmation thing to please my parents because it seemed important to them. *shrug* Still sorta like having the name thing because it was my maternal grandmother's whom I never got to meet.

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Saturday, 8 May 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

my middle name is Sebastián. My confirmation name is Martín, after this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Martin_de_Porres

i'll have to ask my friends if they have confirmation names because i didn't know this was a thing!

sveltko (k3vin k.), Saturday, 8 May 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

i have never used or even really thought about my confirmation name since after i chose it. I was agnostic when i was confirmed, became atheist about a year later.

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Sunday, 9 May 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

at no time during my lutheran confirmation process were we told we could have special names, we just got to cut out pieces of felt into shapes that symbolized our life and glue them to a red scarf that we had to wear around our robe during a special church service shortly after 8th grade graduation where we all gave speeches to the congregation called "faith statements," which was followed by cake and fruit punch and getting approached by lots of old women who wanted to tell us how beautiful it all was.

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 9 May 2010 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah - the confirmation name is a Catholic only thing iirc

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Sunday, 9 May 2010 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

George. it's a family tradition going back 170 years, viz:

George B. Unregistered (born 1840) begat G. William Unregistered;
And G. William Unregistered begat G. William Unregistered, Jr.;
And G. William Unregistered, Jr. begat G. William Unregistered III;
And G. William Unregistered III begat little old me.

I don't know what I'll do with my name if it ever comes to light that my great-great-grandpa George was a wife-beater or a Know Nothing just an all-around douchebag. for now all I know is that he was a carpenter who built coffins for a living.

Lawrence, after my grandfather and uncle. My female cousin's middle name is Lawren to cling to the same tradition.

I vaguely remember getting a confirmation name but it was just a formality, like getting confirmed despite not caring about catholicism just to keep my mom happy.

NARTH Gaydar (joygoat), Sunday, 9 May 2010 07:30 (fifteen years ago)

i actually have two, francis and xavier, true story

weird I knew a kid who had these two middle names but also a third middle name, joseph. I guess being catholic gets you a lot of names?

It's kind of nerd-bait in the sense that a couple of fantasy book creatures are named things similar to that -- the Liralen (McKillip), some forest location in Tolkien, etc.
