I learned the word "samaras" in a poetry class. It is an A+ word for an A+ thing.

It's based on size. Crown size, diameter and height.

When you said "them helicopter things" I first thought you maybe were talking about maybe the water buckets the forest service hangs under helicopters to fight wildfires.

I had no idea there was fruit associated with samaras.

i do not have any woodsy stuff YET, but i am looking into a shirt atm

to tell a sugar maple from a red maple, look at the sinuses. a sugar maple has u-shaped sinuses; a red maple has v-shaped ones.

tropical trees often have wide bases or "buttresses"; this helps stabilize them in wet or loose soil.

have i talked abut krummholz formation? when trees at high altitudes become twisted and gnarled to adapt to high winds? its a great thing to talk about to sound like a serious forester

i found a note i scribbled to myself a few nights ago while very very obliterated high/drunk, and it read as follows: "lease modular pod on chapman highway for business 'south knoxville forestry professionals' - just an office - people can come ask Qs about trees all day and we can leave in a white truck w/ logo on side to investigate trees on their property - leave a note on the door that says 'we're comin back'"

all the men (basically all the people) in the forestry department shaved their beards off (presumably for the holiday season/going home to parents) and guess what? they are all ugly

1p3ers, i just applied to represent the college of ag science and nat. resources with a special research project for the exhibition of undergraduate research and creative achievement. my project is close to my heart! it is about how the hemlock woolly adelgid affects soil's chemical content in infested stands. it's kind of my pet forestry issue. really hoping i get approval from the head of forestry, wish me luck

badass roxy. i'm assuming you read the new yorker article on the wooly adelgid from a couple years ago. probably nothing you don't already know but a good read nonetheless. i come from 2 generations of foresters! my dad just retired a couple years ago. it's great work... trees are insanely interesting. good luck!

things i need to remember for next semester for extreme success:

*make a big binder for each class at the beginning of the semester instead of starting with a small one and having to later move everything into a big one - this is annoying. why do i never remember to do this very obvious thing
*make as many friends as possible in every class ASAP
*take notes on computer instead of in notebooks - took me a long time to come around to this, but i'm finally here
*please don't do the thing of slacking early in the semester and then having to extra bust ass towards the end to maintain an A or B, its retarded
*DONT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH A LAB BEFORE 9 AM

i actually didnt do any of these things until like last month though! i always forget them

something that I was reluctant to do for a while but ended up being a good idea: use excel for taking notes

forces me to keep my ideas organized and break things up into manageable parts instead of just a stream of imptnt words (my usual stylo); also easy to re-organize everything

I saw a guy in a business meeting last month using an outline program(?) on his laptop to take notes during a meeting. Seemed kind of genius if you have to do a lot of listening/remembering. Plus it looked cool.
