i love everything bagels so having them as part of a sandwich is an obv classic, but they are usually just tough enough under tooth pressure to compress the fillings of a sandwich, causing them to spill out over the edge, rather than yielding and allowing a normal, even bite to be taken. just my $.02

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

i am opposed

goole, Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

this really only works when the bagel is very soft and fresh or nicely toasted and crispy. any place in the middle area and you get all sorts of squishing, sliding, and meat-dropping. also much better w/ flavored bagels than plain bagels b/c plain bagels are kind of useless unless they're slathered in fat.

remy bean, Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

it's just so big and heavy for a sandwich IMO - I love bagels but when I'm eating one I want a simple topping and I want to appreciate tue bagel as a piece of great bread -not just a vessel for other shit. otherwise it's a waste of a bagel and a waste of a sandwich.

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 15:01 (thirteen years ago)

the bagel*

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 15:01 (thirteen years ago)

I had my first bagel at age 13. It was A Thing. We went to Our Jewish Friends' house, and they served us bagels and Dr. Brown's soda, and it was. v. confusing b/c I had never heard of bagels or even seen Dr. Brown's soda and was unsure of what they were, or why they were different. On the car ride home, my mom explained that this was what people from New York ate, and that they were really quite cosmopolitan. Because I wanted to be cosmopolitan, I went on a summer-long bagel kick culminating in a trip to Queens.

remy bean, Thursday, 15 September 2011 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

with pb & j, the smushing out part is kind of awesome.

dud is with a more serious sandwich, avg bagel just can't hold enough of the goods so you are getting ripped off, to which all jews are thoroughly opposed.

very public (bnw), Thursday, 15 September 2011 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

bagel sandwich needs to be cut in half and bagel can't be too fat/wide so that you can eat not straight into it like a sandwich but with its arc #bagelphysics

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 15 September 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

On the car ride home, my mom explained that this was what people from New York ate, and that they were really quite cosmopolitan

i had pretty much the same what is a bagel/a bagel is new york experience on a trip there around the same age. i maybe go too far away from toppings - i just like mine w/butter - but yeah i think volume and how well you can handle them are paramount here. avocado is a good fit; a lot of the cream cheeses less so, imo, because they're gonna smoosh around.

Egg sandwiches on bagels are C but not too keen on any other kind of bagel sandwich except for maybe the pizza bagel which isn't actually a sandwich so probably doesn't really count.

one advantage of the bagel sandwich is the heartiness of the bagel lends itself to travel without getting soggy. i will often take a bagel sandwiched to go for a long trip to the beach in the ice chest

this thread is so timely. i made the mistake of ordering a club sandwich on a bagel yesterday.

i've never heard of this insides scooped out, but brueggers has a special knife that cuts the bagel into ~3~ slices. then they throw away the middle. when i told the woman gettin my food that this was nearly but not quite worse than metaphorical genocide, she only shrugged. wonderin what kind of standards they have at breuggers corporate.

your mom the burrito (ENBB), Friday, 16 September 2011 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

surprised at all the naysayers here

i think one key element being overlooked here is quality of bagel--a better-quality bagel will be less tough and not mess with fillings as roxy points out above (needless to say the bagel *must* be toasted)

i agree that big involved sandwiches w/ a lot of cold cuts on a bagel is not a great idea

but a bagel BLT is just... i mean, done right, its honestly one of my top 5 sandwiches of all time

breakfast sandwich--really any kind--on a bagel is also an undisputed classic

yeah even if you think it is barbaric, kinda surprised by the bemusement over bagel-scooping. i thought of it as like a sister to the schmear, where you get a bagel & topping &c but ask them to flatten it so you don't have to deal with a cream cheese avalanche; all the problems mentioned upthread about having too unwieldy and three dimensional a bagel are solved by having dug topping foundations into the bread itself.

i am not defending it, i just think it is a different way of eating, using the bagel shell as more of a vehicle.

I just had a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich for breakfast. I am generally on board with bagels as sandwich filling conveyances except for all of the logistical problems of actually eating them.

Scooping out the inside of the bagel throws off the texture and flavor balance that makes bagels so delicious.

I think there is some regional specialty sandwich that involves scooping out the inside of the bread its on but I can't think of what it is.

big appeal of the bagel to is the fact that it's boiled, not so much that it has an insane amount of filler material. i don't think i'd necessarily mind the cheating, but something about doing that warrants some denomination of cheating. whoever serves that oughta make st8-up boiled bread sandwiches if they're really wasting dough like that
