is it really that great to live in a tourist destination, with less of a sense of community because people are always leaving? or is that freeing? also, beach vibe usually = corniness. and the only way to leave is by plane. i've lived on islands before and always found it disheartening to not be able to leave whenever i wanted. i'm sure there are lots of great things about living there but it's gotta be mixed. gr80?

i got this exact feeling (the cant leave feeling) living in australia even though its a huge island.

exception: australian beach vibe = nastiness

oh and there weren't very many great things about living there.

living on hawaii is grate but you gotta have an end or a break in sight, like grady says. i dont know how i could live in honolulu or work in a hotel, either. the big island was way more relaxed/less touristy so it had less of the corny "beach" vibe

ive lived in HI less than 2 years.

oahu is about 600 square miles-- i left the 600 square mile area called chicago about as often as i leave the one called oahu.

also, i flew to arizona this week for less than $300 round trip! so it's not really that hard to get out when you want to.

i have spent two weeks in the 100 square mile area called knoxville.

a+ would visit again.

anthony bourdain visited it on his hawaii episode: (wait till like a minute in) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBKtZ-A115M&feature=related ive worked w/ dude in the video w/ A.B. a few times and he's pretty cool.

also they did a lot of set decorating of the hotel for that movie. a lot of it looks like it does in real life, but both bars (indoor and outdoor) and the place they did the luau don't even exist.

our outdoor bar looks like this, but has removable glass walls in place most of the time (weather can get a little crazy sometimes):
