New Zealand stood up to the US? Were we made aware of this?

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 25 February 2008 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

The whole docking-their-ships-in-Auckland-Harbour thing. NZ said no, US had a big sook, NZ almost cared.

i've been thinking abt moving to new zealand for a while starting next winter, i don't know, it has been a thought in my head for a while for some reason. and i hadn't even thought abt the ilx nz people being there! yknow in new zealand, as you obv wld be. i didn't even realize estela was in/from nz!

also i understand nothing on this thread
but i have managed to live in freakin quebec for almost 6 yrs where not only is there a huge amt of inside cultural references but they're all in another language that may or may not be french
so maybe one day i will understand this thread

canada is in the americas!
xpost
maybe i am having end-of-winter issues and want to move far away but i also think why not? what i'm gonna move to europe? no. i will briefly idealize nz

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

b-b-b-b-but canada (and montreal!) is totally grebt! nz probably is too, but expensive to get to

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

actually, mookie you raise an important point: not only is nz expensive to get to, it's also very expensive to live in.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

otoh, we do have socialised healthcare.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

Virgin flights from LA to Sydney may be good. "$400 one way" allegedly.

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i should fly out of oz when i go to the US

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

it's also very expensive to live in.

rly? everything seemed cheaper when i was there, but then i guess salaries are lower?

electricsound, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

re: wages - depending on what kind of work you do, the pay is definitely lower here than aussie. i can't speak for the whole country, but wellington is getting more and more expensive to live: rent, electricity and food prices are all increasing, but wages aren't.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

Virgin flights from LA to Sydney may be good. "$400 one way" allegedly.

yeah but what do they charge you to get back?

sunny successor, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

The REAL cheap option is to fly Air Tahiti Nui via 12 hour stop over in Tahiti's airport (a goat shed) for MASSIVE SAVINGS!!

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

my mom did this.

there is also a real cheap flight that stops in hawaiian but the catch is you have only a few hours to get to another island to catch the connecting plane. the only way i found out about this was from a travel agent. they dont really tell you when you book online.

i took a cheap flight to LA that stopped in tokyo for 12 hours. IT WAS HELL.

moral for the day: pay the extra $300, people.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

my moms actually liked the tahiti flight

sunny successor, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

i love when estie shows his travel agent steez

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:44 (seventeen years ago)

I once did LAX-AKL-MEL-ADL which kinda sux ass when you're hanging around at Auckland Airport when it's 5am.

Until you realise that it could be worse: you could be flying LAX-SYD direct with UNITED.

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

By the way, my recommendation of Air Tahiti Nui is NOT influenced by the fact that I once scored several cans of Yuengling and an Air Tahiti Nui t-shirt from an Air Tahiti Nui Sales Representative.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but what do they charge you to get back?

yeah it sounds like total bullshit.

an article on it: http://news.smh.com.au/branson-vows-a400-sydneyla-flights/20080401-22xw.html

I like how the headline is "Branson vows $A400 Sydney-LA flights" and Branson actually says "If we have to sell a fare for $A400, we'll sell it for $A400."

Also this: Branson said standard return fares on V Australia from Sydney to Los Angeles will be $A1,899, cutting Qantas' standard rate by at least 16 per cent.

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

You can get a qantas flight for less than $1899. Just dont buy it directly from qantas.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

who do you buy it from??

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

If you're travelling from the US of A, Qantas do a good deal with their Aussie Airpass: http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/dyn/am/specials/us/aussie-airpass-visit-australia

Ask my friends at Swain Tours about it - and mention my name to get a good deal. Some of the guys and gals there still remember me sitting at my desk there eating Dunkin' Donuts onion bagels during lunchtime ^__^
