Tweeners S/D

In line with the Mohammed Hassan thread - wrestling can't, or won't, do subtlety very much because the safe money's in having a bad guy against a good guy, hence the never have a face wrestle a face rule, and stupid one month transitional champions. Every time somebody seems like a complex character in their buildup, once they get to feuding they're necessarily squeezed into the face/heel binary.

There have been tweeners, I guess, but they're always on the way towards being a face or heel and it's never for too long. Undertaker seems to get this a lot, possibly because he always seems reluctant to be a full-on heel (that thing where he squashes some dude and then GIVES HIM THE RUB by yanking him up by the arm at the end). Angle and Benoit kind of were as well, but they were like, liderally tweeners in a multi-team feud.

steve austin towards the end was a pretty good one at that, i thought.. he was pretty much a face but then is ready to dish out a stunner as he sees fit - it just worked in his case cos of that whole "beer drinking popular loner dude" kind of image that he ended up with. the rock, kind of, too.

i think that a character like that (only one at a time, though), like, one that will happily hit out on a face or heel guy at any point, is always going to be popular cos he's unpredictable. the undertake was like that for a while. and last week at raw, if snitsky had pwned triple H as well as maven, he'd have been right there.

During the peak of the Russo era (1997-8) they were all about the "shades of grey" and basically wanted all of their characters to be tweeners.

During the feud with Angle, Triple H was an awesome tweener in 2000. Then they flushed the whole thing. We've discussed this on a couple of other threads.

Kane was a good tweener as of late, but when he returns he'll obviously be a full-fledged face.

The show where Triple H turned heel again was GREAT, I thought, and it kind of had to come. I think there should be a few more where the status is not unmistakeably clear, personally.
