ECW - One Night Only

So is anyone anticipating this thing? The card is reportedly as follows:

Lance Storm with Dawn Marie vs Chris Jericho

Extreme luchador action:
Rey Mysterio vs Psychosis

A three way dance:
The insane luchador Super Crazy vs Tajiri with Sinister Minister vs Little Guido

Eddie Guerrero vs Chris Benoit

Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman vs Bubba & D-Von Dudley

There'll probably be some matches added, maybe involving the SD and RAW types. So how does everyone think this is going to go off? Is it going to be Invasion part 2? Are they trying to get some more mileage rather than just for 'one night only'?

This is on Sky Sports 1 for free in the UK, announced just after I cancelled my Sky Sports for the football close-season. Ngh. From what I gather they're less keen to bury ECW (ECW got its own DVD, which I haven't seen, whereas the only WCW stuff on DVD is the NWO and Monday Night War ones which both completely ignore/bury all the non-current WWE workers) so it might be alright, but I have serious reservations that they're actually prepared to fully capture the spirit, or perhaps gore (GOAR) of the thing adequately despite the protestations of those involved.

Those first four matches ought to pretty much piss on everything they've done recently anyway, regardless of how much they bleed.

Im expecting it to be decent, but if theres no Joey Styles or Raven its not gonna be completely legit in my eyes. But I guess something is better than nothing.

The talent is supposedly upset that the PPV is now centred around an angle on WWE TV (the "invasion" of Bischoff et al), which clearly detracts from the authenticity of the PPV.

Meltzer totally hit the nail on the head during his appearance on the LAW last week. If they promoted the PPV at a safe distance from WWE, let Heyman book the entire thing, get all the ECW alumni to work it, and refrain from booking WWE angles around it, then the PPV would probably do well just based on the ex-ECW fans. Not to mention the serious wrestling and WWE fans who would buy the show to see stuff like Benoit vs Guerrero no matter what type of show it was.

That show would probably outsell a lot of recent WWE PPV's, which would be unacceptable in the WORLD OF VINCE because it would mean that ECW was capable of creating stars and selling PPV's just as well as he could.

So, he gets a bunch of WWE talent like Edge, Bischoff, and Angle to show up, with heavy cross-promotion on RAW and 20-minute interview segments devoted to hyping the card. Now, if the buyrate is good, Vince can claim that it was largely due to WWE talent being there. And if the buyrate is bad, then he can blame it on the ECW brand name instead, and say that ECW wasn't a very big draw after all. Hence, Vince = Evil Genius.

But like you guys say, with the matches they have on tap, there's no way this show can suck.

It's gonna be better than the other ECW show, where the main attraction is going to be guessing who from the topliner (Sabu, Terry Funk, Shane Douglas) is still going to be alive in a year's time.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 4 June 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Guerrero vs Benoit ALONE is one for the ages, but Tojiri vs Supacrazy is just as exciting to me

I am frothing about this, it's going to be awesome@!@

This won't be real ECW without (x) on the card. Go!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

This won't be real ECW without "that guy that used o hang around with Simon Diamond that had an umbrella" on the card.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

This won't be real ECW without "a 24 minute long interval where Da Baldies attack someone, and then get attacked by New Jack, with Joey Styles creaming himself at three seperate points" on the card.

Apparently Joey Styles will be doing commentary. All together on the count of three:

"OH

MY

GAHHHD!"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

yes

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

this won't be real ECW without a boring monologue by the Dudley Boys that goes on for 20 minutes

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

this won't be real ECW without a Spike Dudley "acid drop"

this won't be real ECW without Sabu!!

this won't be real ECW without Mikey Whipwreck

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

this won't be real ECW if Tanaka doesn't powerbomb Mike Awesome from the top rope out of the ring and through a table

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

this won't be real ECW unless Taz randomly interrupts a match, kicks everyone's ass, and then leaves

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

http://www.wwe.com/shows/ecw/matches.jsp

alright, EVERYONE i just mentioned is going to be there (they don't mention Mike Awesome but if Tanaka is there it's hard to believe M.A. won't be, too)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I hope they do the rediculous house lights cut off, turn back on to reveal a HARDCORE SHOWDOWN in the middle of the ring.

This won't be real ECW without Joel Gertner's opening monologue complete with 98493 jokes about eating pussy.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

Dear Vincent K. McMahon

Here's 35 bucks for the ECW PPV. I trust I will be more entertained by this PPV than by flushing said $35 down a toilet.

Hopefull,
Tom Sizemore

Is it too late to add Joey Styles' larynx to my dead pool league entry?

M Annoyman (Ferg), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

this was GREAT.

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Monday, 13 June 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

I only caught the main event ... but it did look like a fun show. It was cool to see all the alumni and it certainly felt like an ECW event.

It seems as though the matches took a back seat to the angles but for a "one night only" event, with so many people to stuff onto the card, I guess that's to be expected. Also expect: follow-up cards?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 13 June 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. the early matches were tops, but the 2nd half was mainly for nostalgia, as it were.

Still, i called the Spike Dudley & lighter fluid bits, at least, and we all marked out for the bWo appearance.

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Monday, 13 June 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

PPV was excellent. Mostly for nostalgia. The matches were pretty average, the promos were all great. I could do with a little less 'shooting' but I guess that's what ECW was all about back in the day, so it all made sense. I just wonder how many buys it got. Alot of people on the net were saying things along the lines of 'havent got a non-wrestlemania ppv in 2-3 years' type of things.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Monday, 13 June 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

I think ECW used to pull buyrates of ~ 0.3, so if we add that to WWE's 0.4 - 0.5 or whatever they drew for last year's June PPV, then we could see a 0.7 - 0.8, which would be a monster number (that's assuming that most of ECW's old audience doesn't watch WWE TV or buy their PPV's).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 13 June 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

You might be onto something. I'd assume that most ECW fans are total marks for all wrestling, but I'd also assume that they wouldnt blindly order WWE PPVs all the time. I personally would order an ECW PPV every now and again, but the only PPVs I shell out for now are Wrestlemania and maybe one other show a year depending on the card or if its something like the Rumble, Survivor Series, etc.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

That was amazing. A total nostalgia trip as we've all said, but I choked up when "Enter Sandman" kicked in. Beautiful.

I'm hearing buyrates tossed around as big as 800,000.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Did Sandman guzzle beers and smash the empty cans on his head before throwing them out into the audience?? AAAAAH I must SEE THIS

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

He poured beer on chicks tits and licked it up afterwards. For rlz.

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

say, does anyone know what the buyrate for this was?

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Shush, we're talking titties here.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Saturday, 25 June 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone else heard that the reason New Jack wasn't on the card is because he still has outstanding arrest warrants in the NYC area? Hero.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 1 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I finally saw this.

Oh. My. Gawd.

The end was disappointing, I thought. Taz randomly interrupts, but then DOESN'T kick everybody's asses (just Kurt Angle's?)

Spike Dudley showed up and did... what, exactly?

It was great to see the Blue Meanie.

The Sandman is FAT!

Tanaka/Mike Awesome match was predictably spectacular.

Disappointed that no one pulled out the "tree of woe."
