my father in law used to make the BEST grilled tritip with just montreal seasoning. we never figured out how. i don't really dig on it otherwise, it's so fking salty

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 15 August 2014 05:37 (ten years ago)

So good. Have to go a little easy on it, obviously. I remember the day I discovered it. I was always eating at the same burger joint in the mall on my lunch break from Sam Goody, wondering why their burgers were so much tastier than everywhere else. One day while waiting for my order and there it is on the prep counter. This huge box of montreal steak seasoning. Beginning of such an era for me.

I became a vegetarian a few years back and it's been really hard to find anything good to put it on. Doesn't quite work with Boca Burgers, imo. But we recently regressed back to pescatarianism, so I should be able to throw this on some tuna or something and make it work.

how's life, Friday, 15 August 2014 13:17 (ten years ago)

We've been putting this on grilled chicken and fish. I did not think to use it on tri tip or burgers, but I am doing one of those this weekend now. Salt sure is tasty.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 15 August 2014 16:14 (ten years ago)

it does appear that what is commonly marketed as "Santa Maria dry rub" out here is basically Montreal seasoning.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 15 August 2014 16:17 (ten years ago)

cannot recommend it enough for tritip

game changer

I think my father in law used to let it sit for a while, seasoned, before he grilled it to get the full salt effect

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 15 August 2014 16:25 (ten years ago)

well that is it, we are tri tippin this weekend thank you

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 15 August 2014 17:20 (ten years ago)

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 15 August 2014 18:38 (ten years ago)

this stuff + olive oil is all you need for real good roasted potatoes

ciderpress, Friday, 15 August 2014 20:11 (ten years ago)

you need potatoes too, actually. sorry

ciderpress, Friday, 15 August 2014 20:12 (ten years ago)

yeah that seems legit

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 15 August 2014 20:45 (ten years ago)

This is happening today. Doing a dry rub and reverse sear. We have guests. The stakes are high.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 16 August 2014 19:34 (ten years ago)

flavortown awaits u

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 August 2014 19:48 (ten years ago)

I am going to wear a Mayor of Flavortown sash as I grill it

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 16 August 2014 19:59 (ten years ago)

otm

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 August 2014 20:48 (ten years ago)

so I reverse seared it after a dry rub of montreal seasonging. i kept it on 250C until the middle was good and then seared it at 500C. VG's family recipe made me look like a genius! <3

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 04:49 (ten years ago)

i have never been so successful with a tri tip. literally none of it was tough, which is rare.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 04:49 (ten years ago)

meanwhile, my mom probably woke up this morning, grabbed her forehead, and just sat for 15 minutes. I would still punch god in the face if it sat down next to me.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 04:53 (ten years ago)

hooray!

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:03 (ten years ago)

yeah, it was a big success! Thanks again. It's hard to believe that it can be so good without marinating for hours or something.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:06 (ten years ago)

i know. i put it down to sorcery

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:08 (ten years ago)

there was this really strange moment today. We were drinking at a place called Sam's to Go. A woman at the nearby coffee shop would stand up, clench her fists really tight down by her sides, and stare down the street for 10 minute intervals.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:10 (ten years ago)

and then she just left, tears streaming down her cheeks. It was the street with the IV Deli, where one person died. But I don't know what got to her.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:12 (ten years ago)

I don't know with any certainty anyway

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:13 (ten years ago)

for the minutes where she was focused, staring down the street with people walking by her, it was very eerie.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:16 (ten years ago)

The owner of Sam's came over from Iran in 78. And he was very interesting to listen to, anyway.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:19 (ten years ago)

anyway, let's not bury the lead. Montreal seasoning was confirmed to be the best seasoning by 6 independent judges tonight.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:32 (ten years ago)

taaa daaaaaa

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 August 2014 05:39 (ten years ago)

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 17 August 2014 09:15 (ten years ago)

if i don't feel like actually doing things to the food i'm cooking i will just pour this on it and it always works fine

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 23:39 (ten years ago)

busted (art), Thursday, 21 August 2014 00:47 (ten years ago)

fuck, i had fish today and did something other than montreal steak seasoning. i didn't let this poll get me sufficiently amped up about it.

how's life, Thursday, 21 August 2014 01:12 (ten years ago)

ILX preorders SPYRO for Playstation (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 September 2014 23:13 (ten years ago)

PSA - you can make some really dope black bean burgers utilizing that Montreal herb.

Think outside that box ya'll

busted (art), Monday, 22 September 2014 23:18 (ten years ago)

I am kinda worthless without a recipe. You got something for the "black bean burger" part? I will definitely try it!

ILX preorders SPYRO for Playstation (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 September 2014 23:25 (ten years ago)

maybe just replace the spices in this recipe with montreal seasoning?

that one looks good, we made http://www.myrecipes.com/m/recipe/black-bean-burgers-with-mango-salsa-10000001973642/ and really enjoyed. i want to say it was Montreal instead of salt/oregano buy it has been a while

busted (art), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 00:45 (ten years ago)

spice within your sodium limits, i should say. Luckily since the entire meal costs very little you can afford to experiment. Also these shits freeze and reheat quite well

busted (art), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 00:49 (ten years ago)

ok, cool. did you do the mango salsa with the montreal-ified burgers? either way, I will try this in some form because I need some more vegetarian options for when we grill. thanks!
