Gyro sauce

I got some gyro meat from the classy meatshop/deli by my place and I'm going to make it tomorrow. Does anyone have any tips about the sauce? Sour cream or yogurt, for one thing?

Is it tzaziki? Or tahini? I've never had a gyro, why am I even posting to this thread? Oh, because I'm hungry. But not for gyros.

I don't know, I was wondering that! I think it's tzaziki.

You should eat a gyro. But only a really good one. Go to Milwaukee, there's a good one on Brady a couple blocks off of Farwell.

I'd mix sour cream and yogurt together, half each. Peel and seed a cucumber, mince some garlic. Salt the cucumber pieces and let them drain a while, then chop. Mix it up, let it sit if you can stand it, eat.

I'm sold. It needs some olive oil too, right?

When they make a vegetarian gyro, I'll consider it!

I know not of this "gyro", but a suspicion is starting to grow that it may be the dreaded doner meat on a stick.

I think you're right Matt - http://www.recipegoldmine.com/worldgreek/greek84.html

He he, elephant leg.

Matt, I just mailed you, hopefully it got through....

HATERS.

I made my gyros on Saturday night, it went pretty well. The tzatziki sauce was good even though I forgot to buy a cucumber and was too lazy to go back, it was half sour cream/half yogurt as Jaq suggested, with garlic, dill, and olive oil. Cooked the meat on the stove, tossed it on warm pitas, added sauce and feta and it was pretty tasty.

I also made these Greek potatoes, which turned out really well.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 31 January 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

do people actually eat them sober?

ceebee, Monday, 31 January 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

the drunken late-night kebab/doner/gyro experience isn't really as common in the states (it's more about pizza), and as such gyros are viewed differently.

though i still think they're frightening. PRESSED MEAT!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I once had a (obviously drunken) conversation with a kebab man about the old hephalump leg, and was amazed when he told me how long one lasted - 7 hours!!! I was expecting him to say about a week and a half. this assuaged my guilt and fear at having one.... slightly.

ceebee, Monday, 31 January 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Oi, Donna, you sweaty cow!

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Actually it was the first time I had gyros sober.

I assumed from the responses above that drunken 3 a.m. gyros must not be common in England! It's pretty common in the U.S. (no kebabs though, but not as common as pizza or Mexican food.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

your Gyros = our Donner Kebab - filthiest of all meats (yet horribly tasty at the same time), called an elephant leg due to the upright manner of cooking it in a bin sized tube against an array of electric elements.

I'm not sure I could do one sober though - it should have shredded cabbage, a couple of pickled chillis and a ton of chilli sauce.

ceebee, Monday, 31 January 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

it's regional, i suppose. i've never really seen people in the states drunkenly eat gyros. then again, i've not seen too many eat them when sober.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to console myself by thinking that these particular gyros were homemade and nonfilthy since I got the meat from this place, which specializes in organic/local meats.

Some of the gyros I've had out though I wouldn't want to see by the harsh light of day.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh you guys are breaking my heart! I love gyros, will go out of my way for a gyro with feta and artichoke hearts from Euro Cafe down in Phoenix, drag people over to the lone "mediterranean" restaurant we have in this middle-of-nowhere suburban hell we now call home.

pickled eggs + tofu dogs = drunken consumption

eight months pass...
gyros are frigging delicious drunk or sober.. but i must say they are better drunk.. just like wet burritos covered in cheese and pizza rolls.. you still regret maowing the entire plate in the morning and you reak of meat. :)

I am pleased to say that the Aussie souvlaki would appear to be a much finer beast than these icky sounding electric-grill heated UK gyros.

Here, souvs are made from proper chunks of lamb or chicken on a spit, that are cooked over hot coals. So you get lovely crunchy, juicy big chunks of lamb, with salad and tatziki or hummus, wrapped in toasty pita bread. MMMMMMmmMmMm.

We had the best kebab/gyro we've ever had at the weekend, in Sheffield. 3am, naturally

Ha, such youth, sadly the days of late night drunk treats are behind me now, but I'd recommend a spot of minced spring onion and dill with yr tzatziki, though
