It can be done! I promise! I bought a bottle of French table-wine - Mediterre - for $3.99, and I'm totally happy with it. Good for picnics!

What are your thoughts on the two-buck Chuck?

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 27 March 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

It's good for cooking? I actually don't mind it that much as a table wine, but I don't get excited about it either. The Mediterr, OTOH, is tits!

all wine tastes the same. see perry's 'discussions over wrought grapes' for an indepth look at this phenomenon.

I disagree. Some wine is hideous nasty crap. I'd rather spend $4 on some decent Covey Run lemberger than drink the Charles Shaw.

I'm mostly bored with Shaw at this point. But I don't have a terribly refined taste for wine, and it'll do.

Gallo is better than two buck (up)Chuck for a vin table.

There's a Spanish white from Rene Barbier called Mediterranean White that's pretty good at $4 (Cost Plus carries it). Their red is not as good. The Iron Mountain label varieties at Trader Joe's are decent ($5), and if you want to splurge try the Hoya de Cadenas Tempranillo at $6 (Whole Foods, 10% off if you buy any 6 bottles).

I bought the Hoya de Cadenas Tempranillo tonight ... I'm going to have it with grapenut pudding I'm making for midning snack. Fun!

So how was it, Remy?

I had a second bottle and it didn't have the same "Wow, this is really good for $6" effect, but still a good wine.
