best crisp / potato chip flavour The New Generation

Extensive* research has revealed to me that these are the most popular flavours of crisps worldwide - I have grouped into categories, so for example "cheese" represents maybe 50 different varieties. Nevertheless there are going to be some complaints immediately, I'm ready for that, it's fine.

Proust Ian Rush (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 6 August 2025 17:35 (four months ago)

all dressed and zapps voodoo are my favorites. not the same flavor profile but they're both in that in-between zone between bbq and salt&vinegar which would be my next favorites in the absence of the combinations thereof

ciderpress, Wednesday, 6 August 2025 19:14 (four months ago)

i like ready salted i have to say. cheese and onion obv classic. some of the newer generation crisps with salt and black pepper are nice.

plenty of these i'd eat. texture also a big factor. rippled suits some flavours better than others.

Going with plain, specifically "Lightly Salted" ... ime potato chips in the US tend to have too much flavor and/or salt. Last time i bought some Kettle Chips i ended up throwing them out as the extreme saltiness made them inedible.

Last month Tesco had some special edition doritos where one in ten chips were mega-spicy (and the rest were normal), and I wondered why anyone would buy such a thing - I mean maybe once, for a drinking game, maybe? But 99.99% of the time if I'm buying some doritos then I want them all to be the same level of spiciness. Anyway they are now on sale for 50p a bag and I'm still not buying.

1. Paprika. But the tomato-y kind you get in Scandinavia, not the tasteless other one. Never get sick of this flavor.

2. Chicken, but I think only because I haven’t had it in ages since it’s not a flavor in the US.

3. Lamb and mint. Tbh only the first few chips are good - they’re a bit too rich to really enjoy.

4. All dressed. I get sick of this flavor pretty quickly though.

5. Salt and vinegar, obviously. But they fuck up my mouth real quick.

Would love to try Worcestershire. Love it on fries/hot chips, can’t imagine it’s not delicious on chips.

just1n3, Thursday, 7 August 2025 06:16 (four months ago)

Best crisps atm are probably Tropical Sun's Caroline Reaper cassava crisps, so let's go hot chilli. Let the record state that Torres black truffle goes hard though, even if it is basically a gentrification punchline

I wish they sold dill pickle chips in aus! Erstwhile ILXor Kim once told me years ago she'd send me a pack from Canadia but we never got it sorted.

I dont know what to choose betwixt Tomato (sauce), cheese&onion, or salt & pepper.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 7 August 2025 06:54 (four months ago)

Can't pick won't pick. Never heard of all dressed before though - "a combination of ketchup, BBQ, sour cream and onion, and salt and vinegar", sounds insane.

ledge, Thursday, 7 August 2025 07:03 (four months ago)

BBQ would be MOST of the flavor of it, with some extra umami. Basically the Dr Pepper of chips.

encino morricone (majorairbro), Thursday, 7 August 2025 07:11 (four months ago)

All-dressed is the most popular flavour in Canada, I learned from Wikipedia. Sounds fine, just a load of artificial flavours like most of them.

Proust Ian Rush (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 7 August 2025 14:31 (four months ago)

yeah the dr pepper to BBQ's coke is a good way to put it

ciderpress, Thursday, 7 August 2025 14:40 (four months ago)

anybody else extremely averse to salt and vinegar? The smell just completely repulses me.

brimstead, Thursday, 7 August 2025 16:53 (four months ago)

I know what you mean, I can have a little but can't hover over the bag or anything.

TJs sells these black pepper (? I think?) chips in huge bags. For some reason they make me a little sick, I wonder if they use animal fat of some kind or some kind of product, because it's a specific kind of sick feeling that I generally don't feel ever (and I have eaten barely any meat for 25 years).

If were voting my full lived truth it's always cheese and onion and then the bacons (which seem increasingly rare?) in second place. But I am choosing garlic because I had some aioli crisps in France a few years back (a brand called Breton then and I think Brets now) and they were a revelation. Since then I've been dogged by the idea that this is where the British crisp needs to go but I can't see it happening - we can learn from the continent (v. the steady climb of paprika) but this is maybe just too French (otoh I could see a high-end aioli crisp and then garlic sauce/garlic mayo mass-market type, so maybe I'm being too despairing)

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 18 August 2025 00:12 (four months ago)

When i was younger a friend insisted that the best way to eat crisps was to stuff as many as possible into your mouth (the whole bag ideally) causing a maximal flavor explosion as you chew down on them all.

Kim Kimberly, Monday, 18 August 2025 00:21 (four months ago)

come to the UK where it's a standard flavour (& my favourite) - it's actually marie rose sauce flavour without a hint of prawn in there.

If were voting my full lived truth it's always cheese and onion and then the bacons (which seem increasingly rare?) in second place. But I am choosing garlic because I had some aioli crisps in France a few years back (a brand called Breton then)

These, as Brets, are becoming fairly easy to get now. A lot of the corner shops which have modernised via the kids of the original owners taking over stock them, at least near me.

LocalGarda, Monday, 18 August 2025 09:49 (four months ago)

I’m interested in how much chippage y’all are consuming

calstars, Monday, 18 August 2025 10:35 (four months ago)

The co op salt and vinegar might be the best of the best imo, the vinegar will legit burn the skin off your mouth. Lovely.

King cheese & onion probably the best of all crisp flavours just for the sheer perfection and simplicity the execution, people glaze Tayto so much but King is really the best.

What else? I probably like prawn cocktail but not enough to go out of my way to buy. Googled and found a story that apparently the EU has forced the discontinuation of smokey bacon flavour crisps due to carcinogens (?) but there’s only a Sunday World link out there.

Hedgehog Flavour Crisps

In 1982, Lewis was taken to court by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) for an alleged breach of the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 as the crisps did not actually contain any hedgehog.[3][4] The product was taken off sale during the legal dispute. Lewis argued that his description was accurate as Gypsies who had visited his pub stated that they tasted similar to actual baked hedgehogs.[3]

However, I have gone extremely boring in my old age in that a good "ready salted" is something I'd go for. Always love cheese & onion too. When I was a kid I loved prawn cocktail but would never choose them now - too sweet.

The actual best flavour is Walkers Barbecue - but NOT BBQ Sauce. I'm talking about the original, black bag that you can't get here any more. I found some in France a couple of years ago, brought a multipack home and banned my kids from touching them.

For a present once I got these Spudos crisps where you get a huge tub of really crunchy unflavoured crisps and put your own flavouring on from a selection. The all tasted a bit "noochy" except the Chip Shop Curry one which was a revelation.

(Spudos are a good idea but sometimes it was far too much work involved to get crisps out of box, put in paper bag, shake with the flavouring, then repeat 3 mins later when you want more).
