Tiny ovens

I am moving into a new place, and it is a nice place, but the oven is one of those old half-sized ovens. Which makes me sad. Does anyone have any advice for dealing with smaller ovens? I mean, besides getting smaller cookie sheets. I assume they preheat faster?

No specific advice -- do you have the countertop space for a toaster oven? As cheesy as the commercials are, I've heard from a couple of friends that the Ronco Showtime is actually a good product, and there seem to be a lot of non-rotisserie convection and toaster ovens with reputable names.

Is it gas or electric? Just curious on that. I've never cooked in a tiny oven (well - except for an EZ Bake when I was 9 or so), but I'd think it would both heat up and cool down quicker. It would be easier to crowd stuff, so you might have to watch for uneven browning, rotate pans during cooking, etc.

It's electric. The rack measures 15" x 14". The "medium" cookie sheets that I just bought will just fit, and I'm glad I didn't buy the larger bread stone I saw...

Counter space is precious and I can't imagine a toaster oven which is much larger than that. I have an oven thermometer at least.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking about a toaster oven to do bigger things, just to be able to do more things at once.

Oh I get it now!

(I am moving out of a roommate situation, and even though we've only been here a year I can't remember if some of this stuff is mine or not. Like, say, the toaster. It's bizarre to not know whether the toaster is yours or not.)

six months pass...
I got a Ronco Showtime (from a client) AND a nice toaster/convection oven (from my wife) this year! The Ronco arrived a week ago, and the maiden voyage was a pork loin rubbed down with a mixture of rosemary, garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper. Really delicious, and when I wasn't working on the potatoes and sweet and sour carrots, I just stared mesmerized at the roast going around and around. It cooks a lot faster than the manual says, though — if I'd cooked the pork for the full 20-25 minutes per lb. that they recommended, we'd have had a cinder for dinner.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 26 December 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

My half-sized oven managed to crank out about 360 cookies this season, but it did take me several days.

William, how big a diameter of thing can you roast in that? Could you do a very large (6-7 lb) chicken, do you think?

Sure nuff, the manual claims a 15 lb. turkey is possible.
