Cooking for the Blogathon

RJM and I have decided to do the Blogathon this year, with the idea of cooking various things over the 24 hours and posting recipes, photos, etc. Probably some music stuff too, since that's his thing. We will be donating to Heifer International. I'd like to do this as a memorial to Liz, so obviously we will make cakes. Also scones I think and definitely green corn tamales (which I've not yet made). Breads may also play a large part. Any suggestions for interesting/dramatic/dangerous at 2 am sorts of things?

What is this Blogathon?

2am sounds like a good time for FOOD THAT IS SET ON FIRE!

I've only donated to other people doing it in the past, never done it myself - you get sponsors, then post a blog entry every 1/2 hour for the 24 hours from 9 am PST Aug 6 to 9 am Aug 7. The registration starts today: http://www.blogathon.org. You pick whatever charity you want your donations to go to. I like the idea of cooking to fight hunger and poverty. We are planning to invite any local contributors to come over on Aug 7 to eat something and all the leftovers are going to a shelter.

Oohh! Flambe! Want to come out and help? The train from Portland stops in Pasco, we've got plenty of room and decent kitchen.

Oh I would, but my mother is in town then. But that sounds like great fun!

two weeks pass...
We thought we might have to bail on this, as RJM's dad had massive open-heart surgery this past Tuesday. But all went well with that, so we're on for it. We just got home from supply shopping. Except we forgot the milk.

Here's the proposed list of foodstuffs we'll attempt, starting at 6 am PST tomorrow:

Artpark brownies
7 layer bars
challah
rustic bread
currant scones
pumpkin scones
graham waffles
cake and more cake
bread pudding
roast chicken
chicken stock
beef stock
tomato paste
pie
cobbler
green corn tamales
crumpets
pork chops
cookies?
sorbet?
side pork?
rillettes?
egg noodles
2 am peach flambe

We'll be posting recipes and photos and updates every 30 minutes and will be on AIM as SeattleSkies if you want to help keep us awake in the wee hours.

So that's tomorrow night, right? I'm themin0rthirds (but not googleproofed), feel free to buzz me if you see me on.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 6 August 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, I will. We are flagging, 14 hours into it.

Jaq (Jaq), Sunday, 7 August 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

where are you on the list?

Remy (x Jeremy), Sunday, 7 August 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

I just want to say, here, for the third night in a row I have had gelato.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 7 August 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

I think we are on the last page of the Blogathon list, 'cause it's alphabetical and we are Wisdom of the Illiterati.

Jaq (Jaq), Sunday, 7 August 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Mmmmm - gelato

Jaq (Jaq), Sunday, 7 August 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

(Remy meant the list of foods that you are planning to make.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 7 August 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

oh god, that list. uhhhhhmmm... 7 things made off the list, but 2 instances of brownies. No green corn tamales yet. I think I will ditch my tomato paste effort, so I can use that pan to steam the tamales.

I was so terribly thwarted by that goddamn whole wheat pastry flour. Really put me off my stride

Jaq (Jaq), Sunday, 7 August 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

So I cooked all this stuff and packaged it all up to sell for donations at work, where one guy buys the challah, some brownies, some 7 layer bars, a pound cake, and the exploded pie. I even delivered his on Sunday, because he wanted so much stuff. He has complained to me ALL WEEK, even calling tonight. His wife has gas, he's got a strange rash, they can't sleep; it must have been the lard I put in everything, or did I use unpasteurized milk. Damn it all. No more baking for ingrates.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 12 August 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

His wife always has gas, he's got a strange rash because he's sleeping around, and they can't sleep because it's a million degrees out. Also there's this leaky nuclear power plant nearby. I doubt lard has anything to do with it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 12 August 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

I bet it's a compliment in disguise and he really wants you to feel bad and cook him some more food.

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 12 August 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

Heh - you know, he did ask me to make more challah, pre-rash. I personally think it's because I delivered everything on Sunday, and he commented that they ate the last of it sometime on MONDAY.

we should do this

jergïns, Thursday, 13 September 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

so in.

tehresa, Thursday, 13 September 2007 06:49 (eighteen years ago)

It was fun and also we raised quite a bit of $. Would do it again. All the posts are still up on The Illiterate - I meant to put a book together on CafePress of the recipes w/ photos and also include The Lone Biscuit but never got around to it.
