You can try an easier variation on this cold noodle soup. It's spicey hot and cold, which is double good when it's hot out. I've never had it w/the asian pear, just the cold soup stock, cold noodles, cucumbers and maybe some scallion greens. It looks like a lot of work though, and I know you don't want to stand around cook something super complicated when it's a billion degrees out.

I like the idea of cold soup! We also thought of summer rolls (bean threads, shrimp, cilantro and mint wrapped in Vietnamese tapioca flake skins and served cold with peanut sauce).

Does anyone remember those slushie mugs that you would freeze, then pour soft drinks in and stir to make a slushie? I wonder how those would work with a marguerita?

Yes! When I was a little kid our regular gas station offered these for 49 cents with a fill-up. I haven't seen them for years.

A glass of icy seltzer with a trickle of fresh mint syrup is good too.

For drinking, I'm getting to be a big fan of beer out of bottles that have just barely iced over in the neck, but that's because I haven't graduated to making frozen margaritas at home. I've been craving margaritas for maybe a week now? Lordy.

Dinner on hot nights:
Go to Middle Eastern store.
Buy flat bread and a nice selections of appetizers.
Make a mojito.
― Nubbelverbrennung, Saturday, 14 July 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)
How can it be so hot, when it is only May? I've got a growing addiction to the bubble tea place down the block.
― Jaq, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)
I was talking to work clients south of San Jose last week, and they were saying it was up to 100 degrees! It didn't even reach 70 here that day.
― Rock Hardy, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)
It's supposed to cool back down some here today, but stayed so warm overnight. And humid! Which, oddly perhaps, Seattle just isn't, normally. It would help if our flat had some cross-ventilation, but it doesn't. It's almost tolerable with 6 fans running though. But I definitely don't want to cook anything in here!
― Jaq, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)
If you can stand enough heat to boil a few eggs, that sounds like tuna salad weather to me.
― Rock Hardy, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)
So, it has cooled down, but I'm still lunching on ice cream sodas and cold asparagus dipped in peanut sauce. Fresh rolls (or salad rolls or sunshine rolls or whatever you want to call them) are also high on the list. Breakfast of a spoonful or two of thick greek honey yoghurt and some sliced strawberries or peaches - too hot for a day or two there to even think about toast.
― Jaq, Thursday, 22 May 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)
Oh damn ice cream sodas.
I'm debating sticking gazpacho on next month's menu, but I fear June'll be a letdown.
― Matt, Thursday, 22 May 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)
arrgh, why is 90+ degrees when i have to broil a flank steak and roast beets for a dinner party?!?
― lauren, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)
It's been BLT's and cottage cheese for dinner the last two nights.
― brownie, Friday, 18 July 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
xpost: I HATE this. Heat just builds up in my kitchen, by the time dinner rolls around, I'm not hungry AND a bit wore out. And not exactly sweaty, but not the freshest feeling.
― Ai Lien, Friday, 18 July 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
sigh. steak is non-negotiable, but i might have to either wuss out and buy preroasted beets from the expensive "gourmet" store, or else bring a cold salad platter instead.
btw, my lunch today consisted of 2 helados (1 coco, 1 mango).
― lauren, Friday, 18 July 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)
I have cherry tomatoes coming out my ears thanks to mislabeling my seedlings, so I was looking for a recipe that used a lot of them. Found this one. Amazing, surprising flavor combination, no heat necessary.
― Rock Hardy, Sunday, 20 July 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)
that does look good. think it would be ok with a reduced sugar content? a tablespoon seems like a lot, even for a pound of tomatoes.
― lauren, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)
It's worth trying -- I've made it once, used the full amt called for, and it was thee bomb. No leftovers.
I picked a half gallon of cherry tomatoes this morning, so I may go out for lemons later. And chives...my chives never took off this year and I used most of them yesterday.
