Aldo's Really Super Experiment Posting Ingredients Everywhere, Cooking, Eating

Bollocks, I messed up the html somewhere (and it didn't prompt me).

This article.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 22 September 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm all for this. But I have a question - are they sending ingredients to someone, then the someone cooks something, and then sends the cooked something back to the sender of the ingredient?

Either way, I'm all for getting foodstuffs sent to me. And also for sending foodstuffs to others.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

A variation on this that might not require the shipping annoyances would be if, say, two or three of us e-mailed an ingredient to someone and then we had to make something using all three (or two of the three?) ingredients. If you see what I mean. I'm waiting for the coffee to kick in.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

The plan (or at least as I would like to do it) is that you send ingredients and the recipient cooks something with them and eats it, posting the results and pictures here. (They are sending some back, I think, but that seems to introduce too much travel for cooked food to be healthy)

x-post

I like Chris' idea though, that multiple people send you things and you have to use them all...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Or, to coin a phrase, Ready Steady I Love Cooking.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Well I wasn't thinking literally sending things, I was thinking just naming them by e-mail.

The post office is so far away, do you see.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. Like Food Clue? "in the oven, with the butternut squash, by braising"?

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 22 September 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I want to literally send things. I have 4 bloody ounces of bay leaves to get shut of!

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 22 September 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

We could have a list/ring of names with email address only if they just want to be told an ingredient, and postal address if they want real things as well?

I like the idea but I can see the logistics becoming rapidly nightmarish...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 22 September 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

(PS. Pls do not send me an arsepiece. Thanks.)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 22 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I will take anything anyone wants to send me, of course. Except meat.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

I think this is feasible, like a cooking chain letter - the person at the top of the list gets sent ingredients (real and/or virtual) by everyone else on the list, cooks, posts, moves their name to the bottom of the list. Next person on the list gets sent ingredients, etc.

If there's too many people on the list, then only a certain number send their ingredients to the top person. Something like that.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm in!

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

So, should we have a west coast team then?

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

This is a ridiculous, brilliant idea. Count me in.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, me too, why not?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

So Aldo, you should go first. Should we whisper ingredients to you in email, or would you rather just get things by post?

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Since we don't have enough people to maintain UK and US variants, let's do it this weekend by letting me know ingredients.

Everybody who's in, nominate one ingredient to me by email then confirm you've done it on here (but no telling). You have until I get up on Saturday morning (let's say 10am BST) to do so, I'll shop on Saturday and cook it for tea that day.

Basic ground rules for this one, and future efforts:

I don't think any of us are cooking on a tight budget, but obviously nominating very expensive ingredients isn't a good idea.
It's up to the person receiving nominations to make clear anything they don't eat - no problems for me, I eat everything.
The first main ingredient (meat in most cases, I'm guessing) in the inbox 'wins' - subsequent ones should be asked to renominate (unless the person receiving the nominations wants to have more than one and do something with them).
The ingredients should be relatively easy to find in the country/town of the person receiving the nominations.

Alles klar?

MY ARSEPIECE IS OPEN!

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

I once saw a student themed episode of Can't Cook, Won't Cook where one chap brought in a pot noodle, a can of lager and a mars bar. Do you realise you may be letting yourself in for similar 'hilarity'?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I am fully expecting this sort of hilarity. Whether I'm ready for it or not is another matter.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Right then.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Are you going to be the only one cooking off this ingredient list, though?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 29 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I've sent an idea for an ingredient off.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 29 September 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, does everybody want to have a go?

I have two ingredients.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 29 September 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I think to start with it would be easier to manage if just one person cooked and posted.

I've sent my ingredient.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 29 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

That 'right then' meant 'I have sent mine'.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

And a fucking belter it is too.

I WILL OWE YOU FOR THIS.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

*BUMP*

I have three ingredients, which lead to a rather predictable conclusion.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Only three? Are you allowed to use storecupboard ingredients, like on Ready Steady Cook?

Mädchen (Madchen), Saturday, 1 October 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to have to.

Nominated ingredients were:

Blue food colouring
Anise
Ground almonds

Obviously, the most obvious thing would be marzipan, but I'm not going to do that.

(I might have to do this tomorrow, I'll see how the time goes this afternoon first)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 1 October 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Blue food coloring!!!

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 1 October 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I am the guy who went on ready steady cook with the pot noodle mars bar and bottle of beer. I wanted to take on a tin of beans and a loaf of bread but they wouldn't let me. So i took that instead, it was great and i won.

Mark Gunn, Monday, 10 October 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Hello Mark!

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

I am sorry I got the name of the programme wrong.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

That is some kick-ass googling at work.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Item 7

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

What is pot noodle? Is it like ramen?

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Ah, Pot Noodle is found among the other "british delights".

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I seem to remember that the beef and tomato flavour Pot Noodle is actually suitable for vegetarians.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

All pot noodles are suitable for vegetarians. Processed soya pretends to be meat.
(not sure if this applies to newfangled Posh Noodles or Bombay Bad Boys)

How did aldo's blue almond anise surprise go?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Hey I just saw this: Is anyone interested in a US version? I'm in Chicago and willing to participate.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Willing = eager. I have a tub of turmeric that is calling YOUR NAME.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

How did aldo's blue almond anise surprise go?

I'm doing something this weekend. My scheduling is as good as a poll on I Love Comics.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Scheduling = give people 2 days to respond to request, one of which is a Saturday?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 13 October 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I never said I was any good...

OK, do we want to go again then with a week's notice? I will still do what I plan at the weekend with the ingredients I have.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Can someone in the states go next, because I've got some actual stuff to send? Three guesses...

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Well, I suppose I couldn't turn down turmeric and whole wheat flour.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Excellent! Send me a shipping address whenever. I'll throw some surprise ingredient in as well. Any restrictions besides no meat?

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 13 October 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

No meat, no mushrooms, no mayo. Everything else I can work with.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 October 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Ok -- so we have the three mystery ingredients: bay leaves, wheat flour and turmeric?

Yes? Email me your address at handymanda at gmail dot com so I can turn all of your mail bright orange.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 14 October 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

My package went in the mail today. There are 5 edible ingredients included. The flour and bay leaves were too obvious, but the other 3 were fun. All things I have in the cupboard, btw. Nothing specially purchased. Are you accepting email ingredients too, so everyone can play?

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Sure, yes. Thanks! I might not be able to actually do the cooking until I am back from Los Angeles (I leave in a week and am gone for a week) but yes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Ok good, because I haven't mailed your turmeric yet. I've been sick.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Isn't turmeric the new thing that's supposed to be good for you? Maybe some can help you feel better, Manda. Get well soon.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Hey, thanks! I am feeling a little better today. I might throw something else in the package too, for fun. Nothing gross, I promise. Note: I still haven't mailed it yet. I just wrote a reminder on my hand. Hopefully that will work.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Hey, this sounds great count me in too. I also have some ingredients that I could send. Just one question, do we have to include a recipe using the ingredients sent. I have heaps of "Wild African" reciepes and will be delighted to send as well. "I just love cooking"

Carole Serpell (Carole Serpell), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I think the idea is that the recipient has to come up with something to make with the various ingredients.

Package received, Jaq, thanks! The caltrop is particularly appreciated. Initial testing on flour is taking place, it does seem whole wheat-ish.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 October 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Glad it got there without "mysterious white powder" incidents.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 21 October 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

It didn't do much when I snorted it, either.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 22 October 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't know how I missed this thread! Count me in!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Monday, 24 October 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Chris -- I mailed your package on Saturday -- it should get there within a few days. The box is excessively large for what I put in it, but I didn't have anything else lying around. It includes one non-food item.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 24 October 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Whoo! If it doesn't arrive today, though, I won't get it until I'm back, most likely, in a week. So if you don't hear confirmation from me, don't panic.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 October 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Alas, it probably won't -- I sent it first class, which is like 3 days or something. I remembered that you were going out of town and I figured that there was no rush. Will there be a problem with the USPS delivering a package that is the size of a small amazon dot com box? It's about the size of a large hardcover novel, though not nearly as heavy.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 24 October 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

It's fine -- someone will be checking in on the cat, and will bring it inside.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 October 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Which is moot, because the package arrived today. Thanks greatly!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 October 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Wow, that was fast!! Did you like the bugs?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 24 October 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes. And the little brain snout thing most of all!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 October 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Bugs?! Brain snouts?!?! This is going to be some interesting cooking...

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 24 October 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Sadly they were clearly marked as not for the eating. We'll see if my cat agrees.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 October 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Unless you want to make something Day of the Dead-style, with a hidden toy inside? It's always exciting to be the person who gets the slice that contains the cockroach finger puppet!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Hey guys -- any progress on the mystery food yet? I just wondered so I thought I would bump the thread up.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 10 November 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Casuistry must be searching for inspiration still. Aldo's was too easy, I think.

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 12 November 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

More like getting over illness. But I am probably making bread today, so I might at least use the mystery flour! Don't know if I'll add turmeric, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 12 November 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Eep! I hope you feel better!! I didn't mean to rush anyone, I was just curious and have been excitedly planning Thanksgiving dinner and thinking about cooking.

Thinking about eating, really.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

I think I have now used all the ingredients that were sent me, but not in the same dish. The hot turmeric jasmine whole wheat rolls will surely be coming soon, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 25 November 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)
