Sea Salt

I would like to know if it is possible to obtain pure sea salt? I have had problems with the additives in salt and would like it pure if possible. Where can you get it and what brand does this?

I thought the whole point of sea salt was that it is impure with particles trapped in it from the sea. There's algae in the really expensive Guerande stuff.

If you have a problem with the iodides in salt, though, several brands of table salt are made without it.

As Chris says, the point of sea salt is that it contains loads of trace minerals and impurities from the sea. If you want salt that is essentially pure sodium chloride, buy pickling or canning salt. It is rock salt that has been vacuum pan processed and contains no iodide or anti-caking additives. Kosher or koshering salt is also pure NaCl, but contains prussiate of soda for its anti-caking properties.

On the topic of sea salt: Sel Gris or Sel Marin from Normandy, France are world-renown and used by my favorite chefs.

Baliene is the one brand we can get here. I'd like to try some fleur de sel sometime.

nine months pass...
Does sea salt actually taste any difference, really? I mean, is it worth paying the extra for those impurities? I buy it, but I suspect I'm wasting my money somewhere.

Yes

Another reason sea-salt tastes better is beause it comes in flakes. 'Table' salt, or granular salt, uses additives to stop it sticking together and which stop you tasting the salt, which often means you end up using more to try and get the same taste. This is quite unhealthy.

It definitely tastes better - just taste them!

Back in the day my mum used to bring back humping great bags from Brittany and Normandy that she bought at the roadside for pennies. I don't know if you can now - I suspect it's put into very small tubes and sold for a premium. But if anyone's passing through that region...
