I had a rush of blood to the head at the fishmonger's counter and bought whole plaice. They have no heads and no tails and I think she said they'd been cleaned. Now, this may seem a very obvious question, but how can I tell and do I have to do anything else to them?

They are currently languishing in the freezer. Save my plaice!

Since their heads and tails are cut off, I'd think they'd have been cleaned. Generally you can tell because the fish is belly-slit from head to tail, but since plaice is one of those flat types, I'm not sure if they are cleaned the same. And G00gle is not being forthcoming.

Yeah, I reckon if a fish is trimmed it's a safe bet it's been gutted and cleaned. Only thing you might have to do is scrape off any scales.

Are you going to try filleting it yourself? You'll need a dead sharp knife and some nerve.

In my day, women knew their plaice.

For God's hake Paul.

I don't know if it needs doing. I wussed out and shoved them both in the freezer.

I may just have to chance it. I'll let you know what happenss.

three weeks pass...
roast them whole with butter, salt, pepper for about 10 mins in a hot oven. slice of lemon. eat.

the fact that their heads have been cut off spares you the whole WTF Picasso-esque freak of nature sight that is the 2 eyes of the flat fish. truly bizarre.
