Warm drinks

It's completely autumn here, below freezing every night and blustery and damp during the day. Last night I made up some hot chocolate and added some 151 rum, which was tasty and warming and all that. Hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps is pretty good too. What other warm drinks do you recommend for the upcoming long wintery nights?

Hot chocolate and peppermint schna--- oh, you got that.

Hot toddy action is always good as well.

The other day I realized that dal makes a lovely warm beverage. Except of course that it's soup. But if you serve soup in a mug, how is it different from a warm beverage? So confusing.

Mulled wine? I plan on trying this tomorrow after lunch and before the big dinner. I think it might be good, or it might put me to sleep. We'll see.

around this time of year, I always manage to think (like once a day) "hey, why don't I heat up some egg nog? Oh, because that's called custard."

One word: BOVRIL.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 24 November 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Bovril's not beefy any more, but Tesco still do an own-brand beefy faux-bovril.

I've been drinking Mountgay rum with a spoonful of honey, topped up with hot water.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 November 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Teeny's post reminds me of the last time I made eggnog. It ended up almost solid.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 24 November 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

My hot chocolate will always be fortified with bourbon.

Also: bourbon toddies. That Mount Gay one sounds good though.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

one of my friends drank too much 151 and walked through a glass door. jaq, i assume that you're keeping an eye on how much goes into your hot chocolate?

wassail

bham, Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

We're out of bourbon, but will attempt some rum-based variations tonight. I've never tried hot buttered rum, but found a few recipes. That and toddies.

The 151 is indeed potent. We bought it specifically to flambe peaches, though it states explicably on the label not to put it to such purposes. There was another really nice rum I used to buy in the Australian duty-free shops - Bundeberg Overproof? something like that. The story was the alcohol level was too high, so it wasn't legal to sell it in the country. Probably just a marketing ploy, but it was tasty.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

nobody has mentioned the obvious spiced cider! Are there any other fruit juices that are good warm? any interesting things to spice them with?

Oh, and there's also hot Dr. Pepper!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

My friend bought overproof vodka in a duty-free shop and then they wouldn't let her take it on the plane for fear of combustion!

I really miss green tea. Drank gallons of it when I wasn't pregnant. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 25 November 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Natalie, I've read loads of articles that say there's no problem drinking up to 5 cups a day, but that you can get decaffinated green tea, apparently, if you're really worried about it.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Are there any other fruit juices that are good warm?

Maybe pear or peach? My initial reaction is NO to hot orange juice, but you don't know unless you try I guess.

We had hot buttered rum last night. It was okay. It was also on top of a large meal w/ wine and so knocked us right out.

I'm sure I drank far too much caffeine-laden stuff while pregnant - maybe this is why the kids were early-risers until they turned 13, at which point they started sleeping until noon; they'd finally exhausted their caffeine stores!

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

No, no, that is physiologically how kids and teenagers work! It's one of the zillions of reasons why high school is ass: It completely screws up normal hormome-overwhelmed teenage timeclocks.

CRANBERRY JUICE.
Oh so many delicious hot drinks to be made with it...as well as punch.

RSG (crablangoon), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

whooooo:

African Hot Punch

4 bottles brandy
2 bottles white rum
1 gal coffee
4 lb sugar

Pour brandy and rum into a bowl filled with the sugar. Set on fire (use extreme caution) and let the sugar dissolve. Add black coffee and stir well.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, hot toddy. I am addicted to the things. But not in an alcoholic way.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Set on fire

Doesn't this burn off the alcohol?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 December 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Hot ribena is great in cold weather. It got me through my first winter in my flat when i had no heating.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 1 December 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

The African Hot Punch sounds like a bad idea all around.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

As somethnig to put in hot chocolate, there's a Finnish mint liqueur called Minttu. It's lovely and tastes like melted Fox's Glacier Mints, but it is insanely alcoholic and belongs in the loopy-juice drink catagory. I don't even know if you can buy it outside Finland.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Was thinking last night of Amaretto in hot chocolate....

We really must get to the liquor store.

I'm finding mixed results when searching for hot toddy recipes. Does it or does it not contain tea? Brandy or whiskey? Honey or sugar? The only ingredient agreed upon seems to be lemon.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

All those ingredients are optional (although sugar? sheesh, why bother?). You can even make it with rum (if you're, um, out of brandy or whiskey, and you can't afford more, let's say) although I'd recommend, yeah, whiskey or brandy. And also I'm fine with "no tea", but I haven't really experimented there.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I really like to pretend that I'm some sort of authority on this board. All I did was google the same pages two weeks ago and try things out. And now I am a big know-it-all!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

I put some whiskey in a mug, stir in a half-spoonful of sugar and a big squeeze of lemon, toss in a cinnamon stick sometimes, and fill with hot water.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Today I mulled up a couple of bottles of shiraz with dark rum and a sachet of star anise, whole allspice, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, and orange zest. Not bad at all.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

This fellow has a good tip -- toast the spices before mulling!

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

RJM visited the liquor store this weekend after a car/weather incident gave us pangs and palpitations and came back with a restorative trunk-full: Maker's Mark, Bailey's, Kahlua, peppermint schnapps, and Laphroig. Neat scotch makes a very warming drink indeed!

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Mmmmm.

Do you keep brandy in your glove compartment for emergencies?

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Not so far, but it's time to add it to the emergency kit, along with the wool blanket and the tire chains!

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I warm cider and mulling spices in a Crock Pot to keep it hot all day. *Shovel, come in, ladle hot cider into mug, add rum, drink.*

Repeat between *'s until you pass out from exhaustion/booze.
