From SauteWednesday, I just came across Mighty Foods and 101cookbooks. What other food-oriented (not necessarily recipes though) sites do you recommend?

I think I'll be baking that black sticky gingerbread from 101cookbooks this weekend.

Oh, say, that does look like it could be good. Honey/blackstrap combo!

Cook's Thesaurus is always fascinating and reliable...

God bless you, Fearlessly-Eatsitall!

From Aldo's link:

NOTE: Please DO NOT use very high or well-hung game birds, as they will contaminate the subtle flavours of the other birds.

"contaminate subtle flavours" vs "pack with forcemeat". Hmm.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to do this, however.

It sounds much better than the turducken. My dad did one of those up for Thanksgiving and was disappointed in how dry and bland it was.

Hugh's my main man for porkpies btw - I got the River Cottage Meat book on Chris and Vicky's suggestion, and it's the best.

Fire & Knives (http://www.fireandknives.com/). No recipes, & frustratingly irregularly updated, but wonderful writing nonetheless

So I made that gingerbread. I'll be able to tell you a little later today how it came out.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 12 December 2005 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh cool! We were out of molasses. Also, I've been moonlighting and that unfortunately took precedence this weekend, so very little baking was done.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 12 December 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

i'm very tempted to try that gingerbread. i usually make nigella lawson's version from how to eat, but this one looks more interesting.

four weeks pass...
So how did the gingerbread turn out??

Oh! Um. I think I lived on it for the better part of a week. It was fine, not superexcpetional but totally worth the eating.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

Haha sorry for the weird revive, I'm molasses obsessive and was curious if it turned out worth making.

Molasses obsession is good. Remind me in a month and I might post the Cooks Illustrated molasses spice cookie recipe, which is completely great. Have you ever made a shoofly pie?

one year passes...

RIP the caloric enthusiastic majesty of Jason Perlow's "Off the Broiler" blog -- he's decided not to die of a heart attack and has taken the blog in a lowfat healthy direction.
