The way to a man's heart is through his stomach (or: WHAT THE HELL TO MAKE FOR V-DAY DINNER?)

So, I want to cook a nice dinner for 2 for me and the lad for le day de valentinomajig.

And I cant think what. Any ideas? No expensive seafood - I wont have time to shop for it at this point. I was thinking some kind of roast, but I always do that. Something French maybe? A quiche? Desert ideas? I can't think of anything interesting, am curious if anyone has any ideas.

Risotto! Always kind of sensuous and sexy, and can feel fancy without be too complicated.

Dessert has to involve chocolate.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 13 February 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Man like steak.

(actually, if soemone went to all the trouble to properly make a risotto for me, I'd be most touched)

or maybe it doesn't matter what you make, so long as the booze is plentiful and quality? Champagne U&K.

Our butcher was selling "sweetheart" steaks - basically a butterflied ribeye. They would be better for March 14 (Steak and a Blowjob day).

I think some Indian dishes, like lamb pasanda and chicken mahkani with their velvety rich sauces, would be great. Risotto, esp. with a bit of truffle or truffle oil, seconded.

I think I need to mark March 14th in my calendar.

Risotto = trouble? It's one of my regular post-work twenty-minute dinners. Takes no longer than a bowl of pasta and homemade soss.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'm getting a fish supper on the way to see Sunn 0))) and Earth.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, trouble if you're standing over it and ladling the stock in, stirring constantly it's fairly labour intensive

Matt (Matt), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah it's actually more romantic if you make it together, which isn't really going to work if it's a V Day treat.

I am hoping to be the recipient of dinner rather than the chef tomorrow.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 13 February 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

That's one of the upsides of catering, it's just another shift (albeit a fairly busy one). I cook for my girlfriend 5-6 times a week and each time I try to make it as good as I possibly can, so I don't really see what would be different about a valentine's day dinner (but then again I entirely fail to see the point of valentine's day anyway, how's it romantic if you know it's coming?)

Matt (Matt), Monday, 13 February 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

We're going out for Thai tomorrow. We generally cook and eat all our meals at home, him cooking during the week, me cooking the occasional weeknight dinner and on the weekends. (This is changing soon, as he's going back to the workforce...)

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 13 February 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

We like standing and cooking together so in its own way thats a romantic gesture :) Risotto's a great idea - I just made some chicken stock - but I make that a fair bit actually. Some nice ideas though!

And OMG March 14 is steak and blowjob day? THATS MY BIRTHDAY HAHAHA.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

OMG! I can't search for it from work, but there's a domain out there with the detail, something like www.steakandablowjob.com :)

Trayce, what about a fondue? It's kind of silly retro-kitsch sexy while also being really tasty at the same time.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Woah, great idea Ally! Although dammit I havent got a fondue set. BUT! I think I will do this maybe for this weekend or something, yeah. CHeese, and then choc fondue. Man. Hungry now.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Heh! I'd be afraid I'd set the table on fire!

Think I might have a shopping lunch break and go to the kitchenware store =)

Oh by the way I ended up making a sort of French style chicken casserole with whole shallots, white wine, mushrooms and home made stock. Came out beautifully opaque and rich sauced. Good brie and eggplant dip for starters, plus a bottle of white wine called "KissChasey". Lovey evening!

They would be better for March 14 (Steak and a Blowjob day).

It's also Pi day for the blowjobless folks out there.

I made a huge plate of heartshaped butterscotch biscuits from my Scottish Teatime Recipes book. They were gorgeous when they came out of the oven, but when they cooled they went hard as nails. I should use them as a metaphor.

Tried eating one again last night and nearly broke my teeth on it. Dunking is the only option now, I feel.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 20 February 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

Those sound excellent for dunking - tea, coffee, or hot chocolate, all good with a butterscotch biscuit.

3/14 is also White Day in Japan. Only men are given chocolates on Valentine's Day there. Men who received chocolates on 2/14 give something white in reciprocity on 3/14.

14th of March is pants and a bag of charlie day! Huzzah!

Matt (Matt), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Some people seem to think that S&BJ day is the 20th, but that makes no damn sense at all.
