an nyc-specific question

this kind of regionally specific request might be more suited to chowhound or suchlike, but i like you guys better. i'm wondering about turkish bakeries in nyc. i'll be back there soonish, and one of the things i'll miss most about london is having easy access to koubes and pumpkin turnovers and turkish pizza and delicious things like that. the middle eastern places on atlantic ave have stuff that's similar, but i'd like to find the same thing.

Hmm, good question. I've been to a good place in Sunnyside, but I can't really give more specific directions. It's on the main boulevard. I could find it again if I were there. Fort Lee and surrounding towns seem to have a heavy Turkish population too so if you cross the bridge you might have luck. I guess that doesn't qualify as "easy access" really. If by "Turkish pizza" you mean lahmacun, that's easier to find than the rest -- Ali Baba on 34th & 3rd does great ones, for example.

by turkish pizza i mean sort of sicilian-style slices that bakeries sometimes have here. it's kind of like italian pizza, but with a twist (like, chunks of haloumi). i'm going to miss koubes the most, i think. kibbe is similar, but heavier.

Can you google up a pic of this lovely sounding Turkish pizza?

the only pictures i've found are of lahmacun.

have you tried searching under "pide"? Or is it something different to that?

damascus bakery is rad. their pistachio baklava is one of the most delicious things ever.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 16 July 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, heavens, is pistachio baklava a Turkish thing? I hate walnuts so I usually pass on b. but pistacho would be PERFECT.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

it's amazing. i'm not a big fan of walnuts in pastry, either, so this was a revelation.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

I don't hate walnuts so much as they just burn my mouth. Anyway, Rainbow Falafel always had little phyllo spirals with honeyed, pistachioed centers, but a whole plate of the stuff?! Yum!

I've had baklava made with a mix of almonds, pistachios, and pecans, which was really good. I used to make up the recipe in Bernard Clayton's Pasty Sweet and Savory - fairly straightforward, requires a food processor to handle chopping all those nuts (the reason I haven't made it in ages), and is mostly about assembly. But if there was a handy source, I would buy it rather than make it.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

it seems like the kind of thing that i'd be way too impatient to assemble properly. i'm trying to remember if they do other nut fillings besides walnut and pistachio, but i'm drawing a blank. it might be time for a trip out there, but that stuff is dangerous. it goes down VERY easy.

though not as easy as the dark chocolate-dipped pistachio marzipan that i'm trying hard not to buy from my new favorite eccentric lower east side candy store. no sugar, no sugar, no sugar!
