I'll start: CLASSIC. I know some people who won't touch the things but I can eat them stright out of the jar.

Yet... I can't understand people that eat pickles stright out of the jar... Which is weird, right?

Got to thinking about it be/c a co-worker and I were talking about this recipe for a yummy cucumber sandwich over at allrecipes.

Absolutely classic. You can slice them and fry them in olive oil until they're crispy, too (better on sandwiches than as a snack). Perfect for Cuban sandwiches.

I know I've discussed it with Tep, but do you know about the wonder that is giardiniera, VG?

Absolute classic. In Texas, you often get them, with cherry peppers mixed in, in the bowl on the table before your barbecue comes. I always have a jar on the fridge.

I don't think I've ever had giardiniera. Is it something that's easy to make or just better to buy...

Mmmm, look at all the kinds here.

I have to admit, I don't really get the appeal. I was surprised when I moved out to Portland (from NYC) and they served pepperoncini on the side with, like, everything. I tried it for a while but the taste is really strong and dominates everything. And there's something about the texture I don't like.

Pickles, though, are pretty much the definition of Stone Cold Classic.

Classic for eating with the outer crust of pizza. The strong vinegary bite cuts through the grease and clears the palate for the next slice. Thanks, Papa John's!

I've never actually tried one; something in the past convinced me I wouldn't like them. Next time the opportunity presents itself (especially with pizza), I'll have to give them a go.

I will, however, eat pickles straight from the jar - yum!

I like how the limp wrinkled ones are mild, and the firm crunchy ones are much hotter.

I've never had any of those giardenieras on that page, and they all look different from the ones I have had. There's like whole slices of carrot, whole peppers, and huge chunks of cauliflour in those. The ones I've had are all chopped up. Not superfine, but chunks no bigger than, oh, let's say a cheerio. This may be (not strictly) a Chicago thing. Actually, that Pagliacci one looks like the style I'm used to, but the photo's small so it's hard to tell. Racconto makes some that's typical of "my" giardiniera.

You could make it. My grandma did a few times. But I think it'd be more trouble than it's worth (unless of course you really like that sort of thing), and it's fun trying all the different brands.

You know, I bet a few of those would kick some ass chopped up into a batch of potato salad.

That sounds really disgusting.

Did you get lxy to try any wurst or schnitzel? Are you having fun?!?

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 3 February 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

Having a great time. Lxy left yesterday so life is quieting down. The closest she came to eating meat were the crackers that tasted like chicken-in-a-biscuit.

oh my god the turkish food here.

Giardiniera is a pretty big Chicago "thing," but it's available at any Italian grocery store.
