What do you eat with these Polish dumpings? They are lovely and lots of London foodstores are selling them now but it seems a little decadent to have them just by themselves. What's the authentic way of serving them?

With potatoes.

at polish restaurants in the us, they're usually served by themselves with fried onions and sour cream or applesauce or beet horseradish for dipping.

I like to sautee with tons of onions and butter and then serve with a nice pork chop and green beans. Kinda boring, but very comforting.

ps piroshki/pierogies are my #1 favorite comfort food (potato and cheese variety, not sauerkraut variety)

four months pass...
homemade pieroshgi with really good, really sharp cheddar cheese in with the mashed potatoes are WONDERFUL. they're best sauteed with onions and butter til they're brown and crispy on the sides.

(if you make them from scratch though you have to be careful with the dumpling--if there's an air bubble or it's not properly sealed it'll explode). (also it takes forever)

Nothing "interesting" should ever be done with a Pierogi. It's total comfort food. All the suggestions on this thread so far are good though.

i had them at a polish restaurant as part of a platter with

onions and kraut, sausage, cheese blintzes, stuffed cabbage, and a potato pancake. yum yum.

i like the ones with kraut in them, followed by meat.
