TS: moldy bread vs. moldy cheese

For both, I say cut out the moldy parts and eat the rest. no problem.

Friends (who cook more and know more about food) say it's fine to cut away moldy cheese and eat what's left, but once mold has gotten on bread, toss it. whaddaya say, ILC?

Uh, maybe I'll check On Food And Cooking when I get home...

Friends...say it's fine to cut away moldy cheese and eat what's left, but once mold has gotten on bread, toss it.

This is me. Actually, if it's just a small spot of mold, I'll eat the bread too, but it has to be pretty small.

Your friends: OTM.

On account of mold is an inherent part of many kinds of cheese. People eat cheese mold on purpose. Smells weird but tastes good.

Moldy bread never never never tastes good. In fact, it tastes so bad that I'd rather throw the whole loaf away than risk tasting it.

isn't it that the mold spores are already in the bread before you can actually see it, so even after cutting away the visible mold there's still lots of mold left in there?

I always snip off the moldy part, pitch it and eat the rest -- I've never had a problem with the bread or cheese that remained after I cut the mold off. A small amount of mold in the bloodstream makes me stronger and more able to survive the apocalypse, right?

I cut mold off of some hot dog buns recently and used them. Either they tasted really bad or I just worried myself out of being able to enjoy them.

i just cut off mold from cheese. bread can be iffy. if i catch it in time and see only one or two small spots that are *white*, i'll just cut off that part and eat the rest. if it's gone blue or green, i say fuck it, because i'm pretty sure mold has gotten to more places than is convenient for me to look for and it's just not worth it anymore.

a foray into microbiology opens our eyes to the nastiness that is all over everything. with cheese i say it depends what type, like i don't even scrape off the mold if it's some kinda blue style but with most cheeses that are not innoculated with cultures i would scrape. with bread it just tastes like shit even if you cut it off. plus by the time the bread has developed the mold it is usually dry and sucks the saliva out of your mouth anyway. take your $5 and get some more.

jergins! see you in a week? (unless the moldy bread's got ya... don't eat that! also, don't sniff them, due to spores in the head = BAD!)

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 2 June 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

i dont get all this talk of spores being bad for you. surely the spores are *always* around us and so land on food, which turns it green. we're already breathing them in all the time.

AaronK (AaronK), Saturday, 3 June 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

The high concentration is a problem. Also, the sort of spores. I had an uncle die of an aspergillus infection of the brain - truly horrific.

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 3 June 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

Should we, perhaps, start a new thread where we use the correct spelling: Mould.

Curse the British indeed.

Sorry, did you have a point about bread or cheese?

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 3 June 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Jaq! Yes, see you in a week. I have to work the ballet that night, so no dinner (and therefore no mold), but I did get tickets for the show. Email me?

A point? Shit is that what this thing is for!? Apologies. Throw mouldy bread out. Cut the mould out of cheese and eat the good stuff.
Voila.
