Lemonade! (and other soft drinks)

I've made this this recipe twice this week, but with limes as well. It worked out at 4 lemons and 2 limes per batch. The first one was made with th esuger specified in the recipe And was delish, apart from maybe a little too sweet. So the second time I reduced the sugar by a third and it was less sweet but also, strangely, the lemon/lime flavour was reduced in intensity. It was still good though, and proved to be an excellent mixer for vodka (I would also like to try it with rum or gin.)

Oh well, I'll just have to experiment further and make another batch and maybe try different fruits as well...mmm...

I did this but the one where you keep on cooking the sugar. I completely messed it up which results in a pan with a lot of hard sugar attached to it. hah! I only used lime though.

I went through a weird phase where none of the lemonade I made tasted quite right. Not deep-flavored enough or something. I tried steeping overnight, I tried cooking sugar with zest, I tried heirloom lemons. I think it was just me. Last night I made a batch and it was fine, sweet and strong and pulpy.

I need a bigger juicer for this kind of thing -- one of those levered arm ones, you know? I made real lemon juice-lemonade once with thyme steeped in the simple syrup and vodka added in the pitcher and it tasted awesome but I think I got RSI in my juicing wrist.

I finally got a big bag of lemons and will try Tep's roasted lemonade later today.

Roasted lemonade was very trendy in NYC restaurants a few years ago but I'm not sure I like it. It sort of rounds over that lemony keenness I love. Plus lemonade weather is not typically roasting weather.

How about lemonade additives? Thyme, yes. Also lavender, cranberries, bitters, what else?

i have a juicer. bestest thing i bought for the kitchen. (i'm buying a bread machine next. hurrah!)

MINT = best lemonaide additive.

Allyzay knows where the interfacing goes. (allyzay), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

we're getting basil-infused lemonade for an event. i'm curious.

I like lemon/limeade made with carbonated rather than still water. And there's that indian mixture of maple or brown sugar, lime, and chilis.

goddamn ally beat me to the mint suggestion.

Mmm, mint and basil both sound great. the only herbs in the garden are bay and rosemary which while great in other dishes may not be suitable for the purposes of lemonade.

Am wondering about grapefruitade.

I think grapefruitade would be pretty amazing with bay, actually. Not the pink kind, the normal kind.

y'all have stumbled on to a quintessence of summertime. my grampa used to say "you got it made in the shade with lemonade." i never understood it in the context he used, but if you've ever, you know what he's talking about. preferably, laying in a hammock. lately it's been the base of a gourmet-hillbilly drink which i feel is one of the most refreshing, least hangover-inducing summer drinks; can you feel me? you put a vanilla bean into your whisky of choice, i've been using jack. let that hang out for a week or so. then mix to your desired strength with your ice and lemonade and enjoy.

I liked the roasted lemonade, but wife and daughter didn't, so I got the whole pitcher to myself, HAW.

That sounds amazing, what's the full recipe?

It starts here: So what have you cooked lately? (Year two.)

Pretty simple and very tasty.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

I have a real craving for what the Indians call 'fresh lime', which is basically lime juice, water and lots of salt.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

Waitrose have a recipe, but note that you have to play with the seasonings. (I like it very salty)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks, aldo! I have played around as suggested and found my ideal seasoning combo.

All of these look good really.
