We're havign a marathon cook-off at work - 4 of us each cooking different stuff in different catagories. The first up is cooking without warming anything up, which seemed silly to me, but them's the rules. Sweet or savory, doesn't really matter, just has to be nice and ace and great.

I was thinking some kind of salad (I do an ace Honey and Lime vinaigrette), but I'm really drawing a blank here. Anyone got any ideas?

ceviche - ie fish "cooked" in Lime juice (or any citrus for that matter).

Carpaccio of tuna? Steak Tartare?

Failing that tabbouleh's always nice

Hmm, Steak Tartare sounds good . . . the whole cooking in lime juice thing has already been stolen by another one of the contestents, so I don't REALLY want to steal his thunder. I'll get some nice sirloin mince and report back.

depending on how long you've got to prepare how about cured beef? http://www.english-restaurants.com/english/recipes/default.asp?type=Starter&recipeID=55 recipe care of St John

don't get mince, really, if you're going to make it get good steak and chop it yourself, it'll be worth it. For a great recipe (or rather directions) check out Bourdain's Les Halles cookbook.

There's always Tuna tartare? a little cliched but good nonetheless, with a little horseradish cream perhaps as per Thomas Kellers Ice cream cones

Oooh, that cured beef recipe looks immense! I might give that a go . .. I'll need to start cooking it Monday though.

ha ha I was drooling over that myself last night

That beef sounds amazing!

If you want to do something fairly simple and sweet and you have access to an ice cream maker, make Philly style ice cream: 1 quart half and half, 1 cup of sugar, 2 tsp vanilla, 1/2 tsp salt. Mix it up and freeze it in the machine.

Or, turn it into more of a mousse by whipping it up and just freezing it, if you don't have an ice cream machine.

Another candidate: Tep's magic pimento-cheese from over on ILE (What's the Best Cheese)

Google up the recipe for dry ice ice cream, or whatever it is.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha, I just walked across the street for a loaf of bread and got impulse-racked by a jar of pimentos. I'm going to make Tep's pimento cheese this evening or tomorrow.
