Fancy Cheeses! Any favorites?

I had a major craving for some nice cheeses today. So, I went online searching for a nice cheese shop around here that was open after 6 (right when my craving kicked into high gear), and landed at the shop on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg (open til 9!). They made me taste test about 4 or 5 until I found two that I couldn't live without.
One was a semi-firm lovely one called Toma Maccagno, and a great sharp cheddar by the name of Keen's. Picked up some dry sausage, a baguette and a bottle of Cote de Rhone to go with them (I got really crazy fancy) I don't know if the wine matches, but I love CDR. Couldn't even make it home without devouring some of the dairy goodness at my local coffeeshop with the dude named Jarrod behind the counter who is also a cheese freak (and was very excited about the cheddar).

Any cheese mongers around here? What're some of your favorite cheeses?

I almost finished off some nice semi-firm Italian sheep's milk cheese that had black truffle flecks in it for dinner tonight, along with some oregano and finochiano salami. We've also been finding some interesting (but inconsistent) locally produced cheeses at the farmer's market. But I think my very favorite is St. Agur blue.

At the moment, my favorite cheese is a French chevre called bucheron (sometimes called boucherondin). Crumbly at the center, creamy/runny near the brie-like rind. As you'd expect, it's shaped like a log -- sold in disc-shaped slices with rind at the edge. Inexpensive and available nearly everywhere. Not terribly fancy, but delicious.

i love the bedford cheese shop. staff are so nice and they let you sample everything within reason.

this past weekend, we got: ossau iraty (french/basque firm raw sheep's milk) and la serena (very soft spanish raw sheep's milk). i almost bought sottocenere (a truffle cheese), but i always get that when i want to splurge so i thought i'd branch out.

We're right around the corner from a great cheese shop. The last time we went in, we'd just come from inhaling the scent of popcorn at the movies for two hours. I told the guy at the counter that I wanted cheese that tasted like butter and he gave us a triple creme Seal Bay. OMG, like butter in cheese-form! He also sold us on a nice, sweet chevre noir. Mmm...

i saw that seal bay! i was quite taken with the idea of a "triple creme log," but in the end the serena won out.

:-( I am restricted due to pregnancy. But ah heck if I'm honest (to myself) then I realize I'm just a sucker for goat cheese (and regular cheese). I like all goat cheeses. Also wrapped in bacon and heated up.

I'm craving lots of cheeses that I can't have. God knows what I'm going to be like when we go to France in June, I'll be salivating in the hypermarche aisles! We'll have to have the oven on to bake them so that I can eat them....

Oooh, I've just remembered that we've got some very aged Gouda and some smoked cheddar in the fridge. Gouda came back with us from Amsterdam and has lovely crystalised calcium bits in it which are scrummy. The smoked cheddar is weird - a kind of posh version of the plasticy sausage shaped austrian smoked cheese I adored when I was a kid.

When are you due, Vicky? Remember that you can't eat any cheese which is made of raw milk either. :-(

1st August. I've heard some reports that unpasturised hard cheese is safe, e.g. cheddar, but I guess it's best to be on the safe side. Pre-pregnancy I always scoffed that pregnant women were too cautious, and I'd be eating brie and camembert etc. when I was pregnant, but I soon changed my tune!

Well, I'm a bit less strict but I still keep away from the Bries and raw meats. :-)
