Sounds like fun to me.

yes.

tehresa, Sunday, 10 February 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

caek, Sunday, 10 February 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

i could maybe get my sister to contribute vegetarian expertise, too? she loves to photograph her tasty dishes.

tehresa, Sunday, 10 February 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

that would be fun! i have a food blog (yumh0tp0t.w0rdpress.c0m), but it's a bit more about eating out. a group thing would be interesting.

lauren, Sunday, 10 February 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

I would contribute to all this group blog (if you'd have me).

G00blar, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

Any preferences where it is/software/etc? I've got tons of domain space at both TheIlliterate and Teqne and am using Greymatter (which is free but not the simplest interface). I'm also using Vox (jaqsez.vox.com) which I like pretty well, but wordpress and blogger, etc are also good. Others? Pros? Cons?

I think the more the merrier, fwiw. Also, anything to do with food, or just with cooking in particular? I'd vote for the more general food free-for-all myself.

Jaq, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ Meat, the press

jergïns, Sunday, 10 February 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

gah, have not posted in so long there. So much has changed.

Jaq, Sunday, 10 February 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

i like the food free-for-all concept too. just as long as it doesn't turn into c-hound ;-)

my total lack of tech-savvy is about to become painfully obvious...but I vant to help.

how does group-blogging work editorially? do writers take turns posting? would there need to be an overall administrator or editor in chief? the time commitment is tricky, for all the time we spend on the net we all have lives, jobs, relationships etc to balance, hopefully there's a way to share responsibility for all this.

without belittling anyone else, jaq seems like the most accomplished cook and computer person here, if we need a leader. but i wouldn't want to burden her (or anyone else) with the bulk of the organizational work.

m coleman, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

I Love Comics had a group blog of sorts on Wordpress. Worked pretty well as I recall. Freaky Trigger uses Wordpress too, I'm sure.

aldo, Monday, 11 February 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

Wordpress looks good, and we can do a group blog there. I'd be glad to set it up and get things going. The only group blog I currently read is The Ethicurean (http://ethicurean.com/ - which also runs on Wordpress) - basically the authors post their related stories/news bites/etc whenever. When I first started reading it, there were a few posts each week and now sometimes it runs to several each day. I think that works well - people posting things of interest, longer pieces, recipes, cookbook/book/article/study reviews, technique sort of things, hint/tips. Or the idea of a question posed to the group and whoever can respond posts. Or maybe a monthly theme?

But the important question: What do we call it???

Jaq, Monday, 11 February 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

I Cove Looking

G00blar, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

I think, um, put all your suggestions in here and we'll do the first ever ILCooking poll.

mine, stolen from Casuistry's thread title: "Is that...PIE?"

Jaq, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

"Where's Tep?"

G00blar, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

wouldn't it be hilarious if we just called it "what's the big deal w/ CHOWHOUND?"

tehresa, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

"Puff Pastry, You Are My Mistress"

max, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

"Tasty"

Jaq, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

i'd post to it

carne asada, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

jergïns, Monday, 11 February 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

I Love Comics had a group blog of sorts on Wordpress

waht??

Jordan, Monday, 11 February 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Warlock Magazine.

aldo, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 2,080 for "blogged arteries". (0.16 seconds)

G00blar, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 11:18 (seventeen years ago)

Any more ideas for a name? I'll start a poll this evening with all the contenders.

Jaq, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

oh right, warlock.

Jordan, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

It has to be is that...PIE?

I'm in

Matt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

I am registering my interest.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

Me too.

Madchen, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, I didn't realize the pie thing was a quote from me. Oh. Well, ok then.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

Also even though I rarely cook, I would like in. It would maybe help be inspire-y.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

Well, rarely cook these days, I mean. Blah.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

The coffee, it does nothing!

Casuistry, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

yes i am hoping it will prompt me to start cooking more.

tehresa, Thursday, 14 February 2008 06:40 (seventeen years ago)

So - anyone who would like to contribute to Is that...PIE? please go create a user name at http://www.wordpress.com, then email me the email address you used to sign up there. (Webmail from ILX is my actual email.) Then I can add you as a contributor to the blog.

Jaq, Friday, 15 February 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

Here's the link to the blog: http://isthatpie.wordpress.com/

They don't allow capitol letters or special characters in the hostname, but the title can be changed to whatever. I also added ...and can we eat it? as the subtitle.

Jaq, Friday, 15 February 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

That works! Rah.

Casuistry, Friday, 15 February 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Also it might be fun if people said inaugurated the blog by posting a recipe of some "comfort food" which they can (and maybe do) make in their sleep...

Casuistry, Friday, 15 February 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

i would participate

remy bean, Friday, 15 February 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

Sign up at wordpress Remy and send me the email address you used for the account.

Jaq, Friday, 15 February 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

Mmmm, comfort food....

Jaq, Friday, 15 February 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

I think somebody with artistic skills oughtta design a swanky logo

remy bean, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

Yes. But that person is not me. Do any of us do that sort of thing? I think there should be a fork in it.

Jaq, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

stick a fork in it!

jergïns, Friday, 15 February 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

Okay instead of working, I wrote a comfort food post.

Jaq, Friday, 15 February 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

i think that beth parker could draw something nice?

remy bean, Friday, 15 February 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

Is Beth still around? That would be cool.

Jaq, Friday, 15 February 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

I can do something, but I have to get past deadline hell first.

Middle of next week maybe.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 15 February 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

Oh excellent!

Jaq, Friday, 15 February 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

I agree with your views and would like to subscribe to your RSS feed.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 17 February 2008 04:32 (seventeen years ago)

Put your suggestions for links for the blogroll in here. lauren, I'll add Yum Hotpot, if that's okay? I'll also link in Harold McGee's blog.

Jaq, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

yes, that's fine.

lauren, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

I have a future post in mind for when I get out of work hell. I'm thinking about chefs and food writers who've had to turn their eating habits around 180 degrees, from way-unhealthy to nearly-fat-free. The only names I have in mind right now are Jason Perlow and Graham Kerr -- y'all know any others?

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

Harold McGee Hath A Blog?!

Casuistry, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yes! It used to be better, now it is links to his NYT columns.

Jaq, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

rock - a neighbor of mine who's a fairly well known food writer in nyc has been blogging about his diet. his writing schtick is definitely quantity-over-quality and he's a BIG dude so it must be a struggle, the man literally eats for a living and the very idea of fat-free/healthy contradicts his whole stance. back w/a link.

m coleman, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

tell him to stop biting our Ian! daily food consumption log

jergïns, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

'stop biting' is perhaps not the best choice of words in this case

jergïns, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

lol - this guy makes ian look like a vegan

scroll down for diet update

m coleman, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

food blogs i check daily:

remy bean, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

What are the pixel dimensions of this theoretical blog header I'm thinking about working on?

Rock Hardy, Friday, 22 February 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

760 x 200

Jaq, Friday, 22 February 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Back from a week skiing in France (mmm...tartiflette and raclette); will post soon! It's looking great!

G00blar, Sunday, 24 February 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

Mmmm - aprés-ski melted cheese

Jaq, Sunday, 24 February 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

I added the food blog of a Portland-based friend (she of Tillamook 1st-runner-up mac-n-cheese fame), cap'n blog and salty, and her Brooklyn-based sister's Beet Goes On to the Is That...Pie? blog roll. The latter's "thorough borough" post is a long, yummy adventure.

Jaq, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

btw, we are getting a respectable 30+ hits/day. I don't think that's all just us (mine aren't counted).

Jaq, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

I am enjoying your blog, guys!

caek, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

tehresa, have your sister sign up for wordpress and send me her email addy if she wants to come post! I should introduce iheartbacon, who is my friend David - we run into him and his partner all the time in local eateries and they are both good cooks. At our last party, when it was music geeks vs. cooks, we hang out in the kitchen area tasting all my cooking fats and came up with the idea of having a Fat Feast. Which with luck we will pull off in March or April.

Jaq, Friday, 29 February 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

ooh i just realized i haven't gotten around to posting here yet! maybe i will cook something lovely on sunday :) need to do a major grocery trip. i was going to do a lentils comfort food post, but lauren did, so i will save that for summertime foods posting because the recipe goes well with bright salads, etc.

jaq, i sent the info to my sis. we'll see if she gets around to registering!

tehresa, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

Man, 760 x 200 is a tiny canvas. Anyway, here are three initial tries using stock art.

I may go buy a pie today to get some better shots with. What do you guys think of these?

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 1 March 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

I like the font and layout on the first one, and the image of the third...

is that irritating?

remy bean, Saturday, 1 March 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

I like the first one a lot - esp the orange font over the red/purple of the berries. Also agreed with Remy, I like the font on the 1st and 2nd over the one on the third.

Jaq, Saturday, 1 March 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

But I'm meh on the third image.

Jaq, Saturday, 1 March 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

is that irritating?

Not at all, the more feedback the better.

One thing I like about the Yard Work (I Love Baseball) blog is that they have a bunch of header images set to display at random. Could we do that? I could do a zillion (well, a dozen or two) pie images, including meat pies, cream pies, fried pies, chicken pot pies, etc. One of the initial roadblocks for me in this was coming across a bunch of images of sweets and thinking about savory pies.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 1 March 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure we could do the random multiple headers, though might have to crack out some CSS skills and upgrade to a custom level on Wordpress. Also - images could be pie ingredients, or non-pie foods, because while the answer to Is that pie? might be no, we still might be able to eat it.

Jaq, Saturday, 1 March 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

fwiw i love the first 2 images but am not crazy about any of the fonts. i have yet to post to the blog, though...

tehresa, Monday, 3 March 2008 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

turns out the sis has a blog already, though she hasn't updated in a while.

if anyone's interested in veg things: http://veggieliciousfood.blogspot.com/

tehresa, Thursday, 6 March 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

If anyone wants space, I have it in spades (?) and can install wordpress! Email me at stevienixed at gmail.

stevienixed, Friday, 14 March 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

I can even add message board if you like (for readers for example)

stevienixed, Friday, 14 March 2008 07:04 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

Okay, I just did an asparagus post and suggest a theme of spring vegetables for this round. Peas, spinach, lettuces, dandelion greens, ferns - have at you!

Jaq, Saturday, 3 May 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

This is new: Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)

G00blar, Saturday, 3 May 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I saw that. Should I leave it, or see if I can get rid of it? I haven't poked much at the layout or anything.

Jaq, Saturday, 3 May 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

four months pass...

So, is no one interested in participating any more?

Jaq, Thursday, 18 September 2008 02:17 (sixteen years ago)

Well, I stil look at it (and indeed have bookmarked that link in the last one).
There's only so many hours in the day though...sigh.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 18 September 2008 10:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'm still in, but, you know, have been busy or something.

Doghouse O RLY (G00blar), Thursday, 18 September 2008 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

I'm still interested in microwave coffee-mug cake recipes appearing in my RSS feed, but I haven't had much to say (or to cook!) lately.

Casuistry, Thursday, 18 September 2008 12:17 (sixteen years ago)

that recipe was awesome!

i, however, am not, and don't have much time for the cooking of things until january. maybe then! still like reading it, though!

nightmare sussudio (tehresa), Thursday, 18 September 2008 12:27 (sixteen years ago)

I made a few changes - added a link to send questions to and a list of active authors that will pull up all the posts for that person.

If we get questions, I might post them here for responses, or maybe just post an answer and let others respond in the comments section.

Jaq, Saturday, 20 September 2008 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

I had a question about the best way to savor a home-grown but still russet potato.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

Scrub it, dry it, rub the skin with butter, roast on a rack (or on a pile of salt in a ceramic dish) in a 350 deg F oven for an hour or so (depending on size). Eat plain.

Or bury it in the coals of a fire in the evening and eat it for breakfast. Except that messes with the skin (which I think is the best part).

Jaq, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

I added the tag cloud to the sidebar and may go through and add tags to posts that don't have any yet. We are averaging around 20 hits/day, though I expect to start getting some interesting google hits with lauren's Balls post :)

Jaq, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

sorry about that!

lauren, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

LOL, I think it's great :) When we get some good search strings, I'll post them.

Jaq, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

Hey, I'd like to participate!!!!

the bourgeoisie and the rebel (Stevie D), Thursday, 23 October 2008 02:40 (sixteen years ago)

Great! Sign up to Wordpress, then send me the email address you used for that account. Use the email link on the Is That....Pie? site, because the email associated with my ILX signin doesn't work anymore.

Jaq, Thursday, 23 October 2008 02:47 (sixteen years ago)

Also - it doesn't matter what name you make your Wordpress account, you can always change your displayed name.
