Makeshift kitchen

So, I might be moving into this basement apartment with no proper kitchen.

There might be occasional access to the kitchen upstairs, but I'm wondering how I might recreate having a kitchen with minimal fuss. Some combo of toaster oven, hot plate, and microwave? Maybe an electric kettle. I don't plan on doing excessive cooking there (alas) but it would be nice not to have to eat out ALL the time...

Any ideas? Anyone lived in that sort of situation before?

I haven't done this, but I've heard of using a crockpot as a makeshift oven -- foil-wrapped chicken packets, small roasts, baked potatoes and the like. And of course the standard uses of a crockpot.

How big a fridge will you have?

Ach, I forgot to ask that. Hopefully it is a proper one, although admittedly mostly because I use the ice box. But yes, there's a fridge and a sink.

Camping stove? You can get quite decent ones. we lived off of one for a week or two when we bought this house before we got the oven connected and it was possible to knock out half decent stuff.

Whoa, don't use a camping stove indoors without some excellent ventilation, k? Two burner electric hot plate, toaster/convection oven (I was looking at one that is also a microwave the other day for us). Thumbs up for electric kettle too.

Oh really, a toaster/convection oven/microwave all in one? That seems... space-savey!

Casuistry, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that's why I was thinking it might be a good deal for us. We are sort of slightly missing having a microwave to reheat our endless cups of tea. The one I was looking at had some caveats about how you had to follow some pretty specific steps to get decent toast, but otherwise sounded nifty. I haven't sprung for it just yet though.

Hmmm, and now I can't find it in my Amazon browsing history or in any of their listings. I saw it in a Linens & Things sort of store too. Might have been made by Sharp, maybe by DeLonghi. There are lots of microwave/convection combos on Amazon.

Ah, it was Sharp: http://www.amazon.com/Sharp-900-Watt-0-9-Cubic-Foot-Convection-Microwave/dp/B00007BGTL

ELECTRIC GRIDDLE

I missed the word "basement". Decent ventilation is obviously a given.

Matt, Friday, 16 May 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

I think ventilation's going to be a big issue for basement cooking of any sort.

I don't tend towards the let's-turn-the-fan-over-the-stove-on type cooking practices, at least.

Anyone lived in that sort of situation before

my first apt in nyc was in a shabby rooming-house type building w/no kitchen and communal bathroom in the hall. even w/the window wide open smoke was a big issue. the most i cooked on the hot plate was a breakfast egg or can of soup. of course I'd done almost no cooking up to this point. for the six months I lived there I mostly lived on cheap restaurant meals. in 1981 you could get by on less than $10/ a day.

sorry if that isn't much help but I've been thinking about this ^^ whole set up recently. coincidence!

I'm thinking more steam/moisture than bacon and fish fry smells, Casuistry, though I'm sure it will be fine. Is this in an older house?

Jaq, Saturday, 17 May 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

Probably. I haven't seen it yet. I guess steam might be an issue, though, that's true. Well, there are basement-style windows, I'm told.
