Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein, zeaxanthin, and reasonably rich in calcium. YEAH BOYEEE!

bell_labs, Saturday, 31 May 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

it's also decorative!

Winter greens are awesome. (But mustard and collard are my preferred.)

It's good for your eyes!

canned tomatoes
pearled barley
a lemon

Kale is a winter staple in our house. I am very attached to it. It never disappoints.

Aimless, Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

what spices should go in it then? can i put smoked paprika. i don't think i've ever even eaten kale even though i eat greens all the time wtf. more of a chard fan.

Schwwww (harbl), Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

blanch (in boiling water for 3 or so minutes, until its wilted, take it out and throw it in ice water), sautee w/ onions & garlic

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)

i love kale btw

max, Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

I would consider warm, earthy, slightly sweet spices. Smoked paprika sounds like the right ballpark to me. Start small and adjust. In case.

i would add in the lemon + olive oil and then you could mix this with the lentils for protein and maybe the tomatoes

Here's my so-good-I-use-it-anytime-I-have-greens greens recipe:

Wash and chop greens but don't dry--you're gonna need the water clinging to the leaves. Warm a few tablespoons olive oil over medium to medium-high heat, then throw in a couple garlic cloves, left whole. When they've colored a bit (but watch that they don't burn), throw in your damp greens, stir, then turn the heat down to just medium and put the lid on. Let the greens steam for 5-10 minutes (depending on type and thickness of greens) until pretty tender. Then take the lid off, turn the heat back up and stir often, so any remaining water evaporates. Remove the garlic cloves and eat 'em up.

Whenever I get kale I just toss it on the skillet with garlic and balsamic until it's wilted.

Pappawheelie stalkers will immediately put 2+2 together.

muomus (libcrypt), Saturday, 31 January 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

???

i did it: sauteed onions + garlic, added smoked paprika and coriander, water + veg boullion (the one word i can never spell ugh), cup of lentils. when lentils were cooked i added a leftover half can of tomato puree and chopped kale. was pretty good. kale is thick though, not sure how i feel about it right now.

I have an enormous bag leftover from a barley casserole I made earlier this week. I may have to make it tonight now.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Saturday, 31 January 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

I will explain the 2+2 but only if you admit to stalking PappaWheelie, harbl.

muomus (libcrypt), Saturday, 31 January 2009 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

you're a weird guy

Schwwww (harbl), Saturday, 31 January 2009 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

Take it to 77, boys.

Safe Boating is No Accident (G00blar), Saturday, 31 January 2009 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

Pappawheelie stalkers, WHAT'S UP!!!

There's a asian fusion place that delivers sweet citrus soy protein and over a bed of kale with almonds. I eats this often.

But lib's balsamic post + harbl's smoked paprika put me in the mood for smoked mozzarella soaked in balsamic.

Sorry kale fans.

The joke was supposed to be that you were righteously confused because as a PappaWheelie stalker, you didn't get the dopey reference I was making and hence "???", plus the earlier mystery over whether it's you or PPW with a partic sock and and and .... aw shit, I can't tell jokes on the Internets nohow.
